Quick question:
What precisely defines this aircraft as an "explorer"?  Supposing one wanted to turn a different airframe into an "explorer" for "explorer" functions, what would need to be modified?
I have a horribly punny idea that just might send thousands of JMNs over the edge, and for this reason I need the information.

If you wanted to make something along those lines, you could start with the bomb-aimer's section from a WWII bomber such as the B-25 Mitchell.

I'd suggest, seeing how small the cabin actually is, a scale-o-rama using a 1/144 Liberator nose...

The aircraft was designed for aerial photography/surveying/mapping and the designer called it the Explorer because he wanted to.

So aerial photography/surveying/mapping....This suggests a large amount of glass and locations for cameras...I am thinking of committing sacriledge (as far as the JMNs are concerned)...You can probably guess what I am thinking of whiffing... ;D

You could always mix the two: give it a 120mm gun, cockpit armour and a tracked undercarriage.....
