TSR2 Wheel Bays

Just had a thought about the undercarriage and the wheel wells on the BAC Eagle production machines.

What colour would these items be on production aircraft?

Would they still be white as on the prototypes or would they be a different colour such as Gloss Light Aircraft Gray?

the undercarriage of TSR.2 was a pale light grey colour, Light Admiralty Grey according to references, im assuming production airframes would have been similar
of interest the cockpits were specified as Dark Admiralty Grey (similar to Dark Sea Grey?)

White Ensign Models do both colours in their paint range.

A bit off topic but the comments on the greys made me smile.  I had a job to do where the client wanted it finished in Battleship Grey so I went to the local industrial paint supplier and asked for some.  His answer was "What shade", I must have looked a bit confused to this because he quickly added "There's 57 shades".

Erm!  I didn't buy any that day ---    had to go check what the client really wanted ----

I don't have any WEM paint but I do have lots of Humbrol and Xtracolour so I will rummage through them to find the right one.

My own paint stock has over 30 different tinlets of greys, Humbrol, Xtracolor, Revell and some Cotswold colours too. Even so I still find I have to mix some of them to get the exact shade I want!

An update on that Simon, the Humbrol Colour System book has Hu5 as Gloss Dark Ad. Grey and Hu167 as RAF Barley Grey.

Looking through the colour chips I would hazard a guess that Hu166 (satin light aircraft grey) or Hu196 (satin light grey) would be more in line with Light Ad. Grey. There' is also Hu147 which is matt light grey.

I was thinking about using Hu40, I did use something for the wheel wells of some Jaguars I have been building though with my usual planning I didn't write down anywhere what colour I used

Looking at the colour chips again Gondor, Hu40 is only a couple of shades lighter than Hu5

Unfortunately I lent My colour chips and data sheets to a fellow Model Club member almost two weeks ago and with the club meeting only every two weeks its going to be a month before I get them back 

The IPMS Stockholm web site http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/ is some help as a rough guide though but for the most part its a case of opening all those egg boxes that I keep my paint in.

After deciding to try Goggle as a modelling aid I found out that the Harrier and Hawk use the same colour. So a quick dive into the stash produces one recent kit of the BAE Systems Hawk by Airfix which suggests Hu166 so I will go with that for the legs.

Now should the same colour be used for the wheel bays as well? I am thinking yes but would rather canvas opinion here first before paint is applied to plastic.

yip the wheel bays were painted the same pale grey colour with items such as ducts and pipework left in their natural shades

For mine, I tended to use Humbrol 127, which seemed to match the colour in the cockpit for XR220.

Or was it 128?
