I remember the days when MZ was called Beatties and it was in Spring Gardens. And MZ Deansgate was just the Bootle Street Model Shop and had a basement.

It still does have a basement: that's where all the kits and trains are (all RC and die-cast collectors stuff on the ground floor now).

Last time I was in there - and it was a while ago- everything seemed to be on the ground floor. Must go next time I visit Mum.

Stratford westfield branch yesterday afternoon.  Very dissapointing - demonstrated how good the former Holborn branch was.  No replacement in sight for that yet.

I remember Beatties when they sold kits of famous handguns. I bought (in about 1985) one of a Colt Python because I was making props for a play about gangsters and it seemed simpler than making something from scratch. I filled it with lead shot to give it a realistic weight. I kept it for years as a memento, wrapped up and secure, trying to be responsible, until I left it overnight with some personal things at a friend's house. She (drama diva) happened to find it, freaked out, pretending she believed it was a real gun, and called in the police leading to a massive hullabaloo. Beatties also did a good-looking Webley which I wish I'd bought. I imagine selling any kind of imitation guns of that kind was banned after the Dunblane tragedy. It was a more innocent age.

They did more than just hand guns.

LS, who made most of the kits, did a full scale Thompson and Schmeiser SMGs as well! My friend Bob Owen, a did in the wool Luftwaffe nut, built one of LS's Lugers, that was also weighted, and coloured with ground up pencil lead, it looked AND felt real until you tried to operate it.

I remember those LS kits, had the flintlock pistol, pepperpot and flintlock musket . There was a guy who lived downstairs (I was a child) who built the Thomson and did a magnificent job with the stock. The same guy had a superb collection of Japanese aircraft from the 30/40's. These must have been scratch built as it was in the early 60's. Just wish I'd been old enough to appreciate them properly before he and his family moved.

As far as I know you can still get them

I had about half a dozen of thos old LS models including thier M16 and AK47.  Then they just disappeared. Funnily enough, I've recently been searching for them to see if they are still available.

i had a few of those kits also , a m16, a couple of handguns such as the browning and a Luger and a SA 80 all wighted correctly and felt real, have look since but never saw them again

Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for!!!

Army of One

I had a P38 and the XM177 (?) the shortened M16 with sliding stock and 30rd mag.....they were reasonably priced and looked very good when finished well.......

Wouldn't they be illegal under current UK law? No matter HOW badly they were built!

The Wooksta!

Those kits disappeared around 1987, just after the massacre at Hungerford.
