I have just got around to adding this to the website. Its a simple one part resin conversion set in 1/72nd scale, to depict the proposed 'Ramjet' or 'Propulsion Duct' fitted Spitfire Mk.IX. This is based on a study to improve the performance of the Spitfire Mk.IX, making it capable of intercepting a V-1 rocket in level flight.  Refer to British Secret Projects - Hypersonics, Ramjets and Missiles book, for a bit more info.

Hi Colin,

I've just ordered the ramjet conversion kit (along with other items), but I don't know the kit to use with (the Hasegawa Spitfire Mk IX - I think it's the best available) ?

Also, I've some problems with the wings of my Avro 720 (one has the wingtip folded down) could this problem be fixed with warm water ?

I would like to see two conversion kits in your range : a conversion for the Airfix Vulcan in order to make the prototype version (so, it could be displayed with Olimp/pro resin series of Avro 707s baby deltas) and a conversion for the Trumpeter EE Lightning MK2 (also the prototype with the different dorsal fin and the rocket motor - a variant of the bulged ventral fuel tank - tested also on the prototype)

I hope to hear from you soon !

Best Regards,

Marienwagen

Wow!  Was it ever fitted to a Spit, Colin?

I tested mine with both the Airfix Mk IX and the Xtrakit Mk XII and it was fine. Like all of Colin's Spitfires bits it's a lovely little casting

David. The Propulsion Duct intended for the Mk I was bench tested but the tests indicated that the increase in speed was not enough to warrant fitting it under the Spit.

The RAE looked at the system again with the advent of the V1 threat and concluded that the duct could be made to work. They again however had problems with drag and pressure losses during bench testing and the V1 had been beaten before the duct was ready.

All from British Secret Projects - Hypersonis, Ramjets and Missiles.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Will check Shacklady & Morgan for more (don't have the BSP hypersonics book).
Looks so similar to a Hurricane radiator that it could be the source for some radiator whiffing for a Mk 9 - I need some spare radiators for a Seafire conversion!
Colin - I'll take 2 at Telford!!

The Wooksta!

Uncle Eddy at Blackbeard can sort you out with Spitfire radiators!

The duct also fits the Hasegawa Spit IX and I'll try dry fitting it to a Heller XVI later.  I've one on the go now thanks to Chris!

I've heard of 'Blackbird Models' but not a 'Blackbeard'.  Same place or not, and if not, do you have contact details, Lee?

Hello, as Wooksta as said it should fit the Hasegawa kit, we used the Airfix one as its cheap and available.

Lightning prototype conversion is feasibly, I think the rocket motor was only a edited photo and not actually flown in the Lightning, I could be wrong? Vulcan probably not as too big! Flightpath do a Vulcan B.1 conversion but its complicated as for the wings they only give new leading edges and quite a lot of reshaping needed.

Sorry about the problem on the 720 wing, this is caused by parts being de-molded too soon. You might be able to reshape in hot water, but I will send you a new pair of wings with your order to make live easier for you.

Best regards Colin

The Wooksta!

Colin, if you're going to the Newark show at Southwell, can I reserve a trio of these conversions please?

It does fit the Hasegawa kit - mine is now primed.  As for it being the best available, well, that's debateable!

Yes I am, so yes you can!

Do you have any of your Hurricane IV armoured radiators cast up? I'd like a couple but can wait till Telford if not done yet.
See you next weekend.

The Wooksta!

I think I've some in stock.  I'll have a look.  How many do you want?
