Railway GB

Since there seem to be a lot of train/armoured train things around at the moment, how about a Rail GB?

Very loose rules, the principle one being that the whatever-it-is (or at least some component of it) must travel on railway-style tracks at least some of the time. I see no reason why "railway style" shouldn't include other kinds of rail system, such as tramways or futuristic monorails, maglev trains etc... The key thing is that there's a fixed, linear structure that supports the vehicle in some way, and which it either can't leave or can only leave by changing it's mode of locomotion.

Some random ideas:

1. Wheel-and-track tank that uses train wheels instead of road wheels.

2. Modern armoured train, with SAMs, ATGWs etc...

3. ZELL combat aircraft packaged into a rail wagon.

4. Pirate tram (as per Da Frog's inspired artwork).

5. Nuclear-powered super-train probably destined for a B-grade disaster movie....

6. Rail Speed Record contender.

7. Real Whiff, that is to say a "paper train" that was proposed but never built.

8. Warhammer/WH40K train. Could be anything from super-high tech to Orky tech.

Over to you......

O maybe this:

It is Armoured Recovery Vehicle used by Polish Railroads in emergency operations. Bigger version of picture here:

I take it it doesn't actually run on the tracks though: it's just used as a prime mover? (Sorry, can't read the Polish)

Yes,
Quoteit's just used as a prime mover
. But it's used by railways company. And, for "whiff-corectness", model of it can have additional wheels for driving on tracks.

Hah, been there, done that, with me on board the train at the time too. :)

Seriously though, I've got books of the 'proposed trains', but could be a bit of a job making them. Could be lots of fun though.  ;)
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

With the extra wheels to run on the rails it would be fine: the idea is to make vehicles that run ON train tracks, not just vehicles owned by railway companies.

Yeah! Why not!

Thought about doing a railway build set in some fictional African state.
Or taking Revell's (probably a re-box of someone else's kit) Big Boy locomotive and putting it on anti-grav devices.
And there were some cool pics of a Russian armoured train from Chechnya in a thread on railway whifs. Could be cool to adapt to a US setting (which would also vastly simplify sourcing appropriate donor bits).
Cheers,

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

I caught a few bits of the movie Wild Wild West over the weekend and what do you know? It's got a steampunk "derailer tank" in it which not only runs on rails or wheels but docks with the front of an armoured train for good measure!

Unfortunately, the best pic I can find of it is this toy, but you get the idea:

Been thinking of swapping parts between Dapol's 9F and BoB classes to create a 9P and a super-Q1 for some time now. Count me in.

I'll  bet there are some here who haven't a CLUE what you're on about Bob, But I'm there with you.  ;D Wouldn't the 9P be a Boxpok wheeled Brittania though?

Thank you!  ;D

Absolutely right. Essentially, the idea is what if the Brits were built at Brighton rather than Crewe?

If I were bolder, I'd create a 4-8-2 8P Super-Duke with the 9F driving wheels, as well as the truck and bogie from the BoB but that would leave the BoB a 2-6-2 and a rather awkward one at that!

This might get me motivated. For some time now I've wanted to turn the Airfix Stirling into a train, it just looks like it could easily be an electric locomotive. At least, it does to my warped imagination.

That is just GENIUS!

Please please please can I steal that idea off you?!! Not for this GB if it goes ahead obviously but at some point in the future.
