I'm trying to gather some more information on the Hawker Siddeley Dynamics SRAAM/Taildog projects. I've got BSP IV, which tells me the basics.

Then there is the preserved hardware:

Display model at Cosford:

This one is 2m50 long and about 16cm in diameter. The length is surprising, because BSP has a length of 2.0 m for Taildog, and 2.7 m for SRAAM-75 and SRAAM-100. So I wonder where this display model fits in. The fin configuration does match the  SRAAM-75/SRAAM-100 drawing in BSP.
Now, since this is a display model and not real hardware, it doesn't have to be an accurate representation of the missile.

There's a launcher at the Bristol Aero Collection:

As far as I can measure from photos, the diameter fits the 16,5 cm quoted in BSP.
I don't have a good side-on shot, so the length measurement from the photo is distorted (I measured 2m20, which is way off).
This launcher could be another mockup, or real flight hardware, as seen in the photo below. I'm going to contact Bristol Aero to see if they know more.

Is there anywhere else I could gather more info? Other books? Or would I have to go to the source (HSD archives, presumably in BAE hands these days?)

There's several photo's on Secret Projects.  There's also a snippet from an engineer who worked as an apprentice on the program who said the missile would have been named Mongoose in production.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Thanks, I'm familiar with the Secret Projects thread (including the pictures that used to be in that thread but have been removed), and with probably every other page on SRAAM on the internet. I've also found several articles in Flight International.

I'd recommend old copies of Jane's.  Always a good source.

The pics are still there - you need to log in to see them though.

I've started collecting the information I have into a Wikipedia article:

I'd appreciate any corrections and additional info. For instance I don't have the weight and range of the later versions yet.

edit: the page is now in the main encyclopedia.

Interesting: the missile that became Rapier was apparently going to be called Mongoose too, but the name was allegedly rejected by the relevent committee because they couldn't figure out what the plural of mongoose was....
