RAF Coastal strike

Specifically the Banff and North Coates wings using Mosquitos.

I'm toying with adding either white or medium sea grey in a mirror wave pattern or similar over the EDSG of a Mosquito to give it better over water camo.  Given my extended war scenario into 1946, I figure the Luftwaffe would be fielding jets over Norway (He 162s most likely, given that they were operational in April '45 - none of the Napkinwaffe will do) so the Mosquitos, Hornets and Brigands will be a bit more vulnerable and anything to break up the shape would help.

Any thoughts?

Lee,

I think white would be too strong.  I'd go with MSG or even slate grey.  Regarding the actual pattern, I'd stick with the disruptive type scheme that the Mossies used in their day-fighter role.  I'm not 100% sure on what you mean by a 'mirror wave pattern' as I haven't encountered that terminology before.

Ounds good.....White would be good against a snowy background, but a Medium Sea Grey would also be effective.
Not sure the "wave mirror"-type scheme would work, except to confuse enemy aircraft regarding recognition, but in the gloom of a winter Norway, that possibly wouldn't apply.

Have you considered a wraparound White/Dark Sea Grey scheme similar to the one used by Tornadoes, Jaguars and Harriers? That could "hide" and confuse the opposition.

Looking forward to Norwegian-based He-162s as well.

Ok, MSG it is.

Mirror wave was what German anti shipping aircraft used.  I doubt I'd be building any Norwegian based 162s though.

G'day Lee,

I had a funny feeling that's what you meant.  I'm assuming that's the Wellenmuster the Ju-88s used.  It would be a confusion for the other side, a bit like the camo the Hurricanes used in the Desert, but I guess that there's always the chance of getting attacked by your own side.

Either way, I'm sure it'll be an interesting look.

I've an Airfix Mosquito on the go that'll be a Tse-Tse Fly in the scheme outlined.  I *really* dislike the MSG/Dark Green camo they did use and wanted to go with something different.  And having already done one Hornet in a Coastal scheme, I need something different for that.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Maverick

Lee,

Whilst I realise you're restricted in 'viable' schemes given the area of ops, maybe a scheme of blues or greens (using the appropriate colour palette) might be different?  You could reasonably forgo the sky lowers given the altitudes that the strikers were flying and use a wraparound scheme similar to the modern Bundesmarine's Norm 87 scheme.

Just a thought.

Mav

The Wooksta!

The Sky lowers would be the low demarcation but given the altitude and climate, perhaps MSG would be better?  EDSG with Slate Grey over Sky or MSG would be a help.  I'll have a mess about with colours sooner or later as I fancy a straight built of a Tamiya FB.VI with rockets - it's easier than the Airfix kit for a start.

As for the type of jets the luftwaffe would be fielding, He 162s would be better due to the engine position.  Given the temperamental nature of the German jet engines, the 262 would be more of a liability due to the underslung engines ingesting snow.

I am having the same "dilemma" with my Henley FAA dive bomber. I decided to replace the "green" Slate Gray with a blue-gray (more akin to dark PRU blue), and make the Sea Gray "medium". Just my choice. Example below on a "painting dummy":

My mind is like a compost heap: both "fertile" and "rotten"!

Can't see the Navy going for that scheme as it doesn't look effective in any theatre.

Ian the Kiwi Herder

Late to this thread.... Lee, would you consider EDSG/OG over MSG in the standard Mosquito pattern or more simply just two of the above colours, again in the standard pattern.

Confuscious (maybe)

The Wooksta!

I don't think it would work, because of the stark contrast between EDSG and OG.

I don't have any dead Mosquitos I can try the schemes on either...

The Wooksta!

Having dug through the wall of Tamiya Mosquitos to find one that wasn't started (the one I dug out was sans engines of all things!), I discovered a structurally complete Tse-Tse Fly that was going to go SEAC.

It's got the Paragon tropical filters which may be replaced because they're wrong (they're not chunky enough and don't follow the curve of the cowling enough - Hurrican Vokes filters look to be bang on the money though).

So, I'm now considering two schemes for it.  First is the SEAC option, in Slate Grey over Extra Dark Sea Grey with Sky undersurfaces and white recognition bands with SEAC markings.  The second is one operating from Gib against U-boats and it'd get a rather unusual scheme of Dark Slate Grey over Light Slate Grey with Azure Blue undersurfaces, similar to that worn by some of the Buckinghams.

I really like the second option, as it's unusual but I also don't have to paint those sodding recognition stripes...

Mossie

I've seen before on Don Color a scheme of Dark Mediterranean Blue/Light Mediterranean Blue over Azure or Light Mediterranean Blue.  That would work for a Gib based machine.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.
