Three images for y'all, taken from "Naval Fighters N° 6: Chance Vought F7U Cutlass" by Steve Ginter, all of V-346 development ideas:

1: the V-346B, the "Conventional" version mentioned previously, powered by 2 x J-34s:

2: The V-346C, a triple-J-34-engined version (this one would be relatively easy to do):

3: The V-346D, again with three J-34s but this time two are mounted in wing nacelles with the third being buried in the fuselage:

There's no picture of the F7U-1/-3 hybrid in the book, unfortunately.

Taking the Cutlass/Twin Boom DH-series one major step forward:

Hobbycraft Cutlass front end, back end of Monogram F-15A, remove wings of Cutlass and scratchbuild a thin wing variant with extra sweep and a twin boom tail set up to compensate for accoustic compression problems.   Stubby nose/high cockpit arrangement saved for ground attack roles.     Sort of a  supersonic Sea Vixen contemporary.  Downrate the engines if necessary.

I don't think I'm nuts enough to do it, but have an extra Monogram F-15 bought for parts at an old IPMS meet for cheap. ($2US)............Hmmmmmm...

Daryl J., thinking about this one for a bit.

Ever seen the Grumman Model 97?

I was thinking -- Imagine a tailless scaled-up version of this baby with a shorter tailpipe, tailfins mounted at the half-span on the wing, a bubble-cockpit like the F7U-3 moved a little bit further aft, maybe a slightly triangular fuselage cross-section like the F-106A and F8U-3 had, and/or raked-intakes.

It looks like it would be a perfect "Super-Cutlass".

That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.

Dork the kit slayer

I think the Cutlass has always fired the Wif imagination........and rightly so in my opinion.

Im pink therefore Im Spam...and not allowed out without an adult

Seriously, I'd actually like to delve into that Super-Cutlass idea more.  Can I create my own thread dedicated to the topic?

I was thinking of a conceptual "Super-Cutlass", much like how the XF8U-3 was the Super Crusader:  Bigger, Faster and Cooler-Looking.

The idea I've come up with so far is based on the Grumman Model 97 which was actually one of the studies that ultimately evolved into the F11F/F-11.

These pictures are from the book "U.S. Naval Air Superiority: Delevelopment of Shipborne Jet Fighters - 1943-1962"
by Tommy H. Thomason (Note:  Should the owner of these images wish them to be removed, just tell me and I'll delete them)

The idea essentially would be to get rid of the horizontal stabilizer, making the design tailless, delete the tailfin on the back and add two tailfins at roughly the half-span mark.  I'd like to use a similar style canopy the F7U-3 had.

The Cutlass was a twin-engined design, but with large engines like the J-57 I'm not sure whether to go with a single engine or twin-jets.  I'd like to hear everybody's opinions

As seen in Vancouver, WA this past Saturday:

The modeler I don't know but the condition of his finish was near perfect.   It did make me want to do my Whiffer in 1/72.

I was just watching my DVDs of the old "Star Blazers" (Space Cruiser Yamato) Sieries And I got a brainstorm.I'm watching the first season and thought that the "Black Tigers" color scheme might look good on a Cutlass

Panzerwulff,

Does look like an interesting idea though it isn't my personal cup of tea (No offense)
