I haven't seen what's become of the first P-3 to go into the shop, but the second is already out.  It's a P-3C assigned to NAS Jacksonville, painted in the markings of an aircraft of VP-44 which spotted the Japanese fleet off Midway in 1942.

And that must have been a Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon.

No, it was a PBY Catalina.

What do mean a Harpoon?  PBY Catalinas found the IJN fleet at Midway and PV2s weren't even in service until 1944.  Sorry if you were trying to make a joke but you sounded serious.  Disregard if you were joking.

That was not meant to be a joke... I'd seen that scheme on the Harpoon and thought that's what the VP-44 aircraft was. Didn't realize the Harpoon came so late in the war! Sorry for the confusion!  :-X

Its all good man.  Remember the Harpoon was an improved version of the PV-1 Ventura which looks very similar.  They were in service earlier, so if you saw the blue-gray over light gray scheme on one then it was a Ventura.

That blue grey/light grey scheme has always been a favourite of mine. Always looks smart
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

That was for the 90th, not 100th anniversary, but it's cool...

100th Anniversary aircraft are all in this great page, full of pics and info:

A lot of people didn't like that F-16 paint job... I loved it

Well I guess that's partly because the layout of the markings wasn't exactly "kosher"... the 13 stripes were never applied to the wings on real 1930s US military aircraft, only to the rudder... They tried to mix bits and pieces from various schemes, hence the problem. But the general impression remains striking!

I hadn't seen those birds from Oceana.  I've been wondering when the 1960s schemes were going to make an appearance.  I'm still waiting for some gray over white ones.  Anyway, aircraft are starting to fly to the West Coast for the flyover that's scheduled in a couple of weeks.

That picture settles it! We need to bring those schemes back!

If you like that, dig this one.  The blues look awesome against the sky.

P-3C, assigned to Patrol Wing 2 out of MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, painted in the markings of VP-6

Some early P-3s flew in this scheme, but not this particular bird.
