After more than a week of scanning the web for new shots, I find that they've started paint jobs on at least two P-3s.  The first one is getting the classic maritime patrol scheme of white on top, "seaplane gray"on the bottom.

The Prowler is out of the paint shop.  1942 markings, circa the Battle of the Coral Sea.

WOW!!!

I love each and every one of these! I really don't like modern solid grey with grey markings... these schemes really bring the airframes to life! :)

I've heard the suggestion, repeatedly now, that some of these retro-schemed birds be sent to one of the Red Flag meets to see how the colors work in a modern combat environment, compared with the current "low vis" schemes.

Here's that Growler from a couple of weeks ago, outside.  I still think the blues are a little bright, but it looks good.  Assigned to VAQ-129 at NAS Whidbey Island, but painted in Air Group 85 markings off USS Shangri-La.

If blue worked well for Navy birds in WW2 I don't see why it shouldn't work nowadays, especially if the modus operandi is to stay as BVR as possible... the sea hasn't changed (much) since 1945!

(By the same token I still think that the old USAF Air Superiority Blue scheme would be a lot better than this stupid grey...)

Good stuff. Any sign of a Superbug yet? I'm still hoping for a 50s/60s Crusader or Phantom scheme on something.

I haven't seen what's become of the first P-3 to go into the shop, but the second is already out.  It's a P-3C assigned to NAS Jacksonville, painted in the markings of an aircraft of VP-44 which spotted the Japanese fleet off Midway in 1942.

And that must have been a Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon.
