Inspired by the NACA wind tunnel model photos of the XP-47A over on secretprojects, particularly those with the annular radiator, see here: http://crgis.ndc.nasa.gov/historic/File:NACA_25346.JPG

I know the R-2800 cowling isn't really long enough but it has the overall shape I was looking for (and was available  ;) ).

Definately gonna have to get me some more P-47s and cut their bottoms off!!!

The Wooksta!

Looks like a Japanese Raiden.  A captured one in Japanes markings next to a Raiden for comparative trials would look the biz!

I like it. May I?

Please do!

This will be the first in a series. Defo want to try an annular V-1710 on the next one! The challenge will be making an inline fit the T-bolt's rotund frame.

It does look like a Raiden doesn't it?

Didn't Republic do that?

The spikey nosed XP-47H used an in-line Chrysler V-16 engine, but it still had the fat belly of the standard aeroplane.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Isn't that needed because of the intakes for the enormous turbocharger?

Can't deny it looks very good though. :)

Bit of trivia, it was an inverted V-16, basically two V-8's with a space between them for the gearing to the propeller.  Also (so I've read) the originator to the famous 'Hemi' engines Chrysler put out for their muscle cars.

MPM's 1/72 kit below, if you can find one

^ Got one!  ;)

The H is a thing of beauty but what I really want is to replicate the look of the annular radiator cowling in the link in the original post. The R-2800 cowling doesn't look too bad but isn't quite right. Any suggestions?

Really nice shape you have going there Bob  If your trying to get closer to the original shape seen in your links it looks like it needs around 3-4'(scale) fuselage extension in front of the wings behind the new cowling

A little fatter at the rear and more sharply tapered toward the nose perhaps? The wind tunnel model has a more curved profile to the cowling I think.

And if did it carry multiblade Contrarotating propellers inside the fairing?
If you said so....

I think this one will stay as is with the R-2800. It will be a low-level optimised fighter-bomber (no need for the turbocharger that way).

For the annular one (off to ebay), I have a couple of candidate "conglomerations" of parts. It won't be exact, just reminiscent thereof. I'll post pics sometime this weekend to see which you guys think works best. If anyone comes up with a piece/part/something that might work in the meantime, please let me know.

Pablo, I'm planning one with a ducted spinner (is that what you mean by inside the fairing?). That will be a contra-prop if I can find enough identical propeller blades.

I'm on a bit of a Seversky/Republic kick at the moment.

Yes like the FW190 but with more blades, between the engine and the prop.
