Mossie's idea re the Hobbyboss kits is a good one. I'm not sure the new tool Airfix stuff is ideal for a 6-9 year old as a first kit or two. Once in to it then they'd be fine, but Hobbyboss would be a great intro and they'd be flying it around after a very short time  ;D

Yeah, I do like that the Hobbyboss kits fit between clip kits and a simple kit.  I don't feel that the Airfix (and others) starter kits offer anything for the beginner than glue and paint.  I actually think they're less suited than the old kits as they have more parts and complexity and are designed with middle-aged men in mind.  I don't think kids are too worried if their first attempt has big gaps or the accuracy is a bit off, they're more bothered about banging something together and calling it their own.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Thanks for the info chaps.....i take on board the comments re first kits......should think it would be the same as me and Max.....i do cutting n trimming n apply most of the glue n he does the pushing together, painting n decals.....but I'll suggest the Hobbyboss kits.....

A Tri-Star tanker would need MAJOR re-tooling as the original kit was a -200 and the RAF's tankers are all -500s with a shorter fuselage etc. Airfix aren't into airliners much these days, sadly, so I doubt they'd see any money in doing that.

i was thinking, with the re-release of the DH Comet, Boeing 707 and Vickers Vanguard this year, they would bring back others.
like the HP.42 biplane airliner, that thing is a beauty

Must admit the HP.42 has always had a special place in my modelling heart. Being a Croydon lad there's a fair few pubs in the area I frequent with pictures of it on the wall, along with a few other 30's airliners. I have built it but it would be a nice nostalgia trip. Maybe one in a modern airline style livery and another in a 1939 camouflage scheme as a commandeered example ?

Edit. And yes, and before I'm pointed in the direction of EBay  ;D, I know I can get a second hand kit but I'd rather have a newly produced one
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I've always wanted to build one of those myself, and missed the boat twice when I have seen them on sale. So a new one would be nice !

LOTS of rigging on an HP 42 if you do it properly, and it's 1/144 scale as well!   :o

IIRC a new L-1011 has been announced (I'd have to check how's doing it) too.

I've tried to find this and failed, so no new L-1011 it seems.

Not so. Apart from a pair of cross wires between the two outermost wing struts, and some in the tail unit, all other rigging was internal, particularly in the wing struts.

I'd like to do one of these (possibly in current BA livery), but I'd also fancy  a D H Flamingo  and/or A W Ensign at some point too.

Question,  was it the Flamingo that was rather fragile?  I can vaguely remember a pre war picture of one broken off just aft of the wings.

I reckon you're thinking of the Albatross, the four engine, low wing, super streamlined DH airliner, which used a similar balsa/ply sandwich construction later made famous by the Mossie. There were only seven of them and four were destroyed in crash landings.

Is this the pic you remember? It looks as if it's the prototype as it has a Class B reggie, but it must have been rebuilt as there's no record I can find of it being scrapped. Strong glue they had.....

The Flamingo was DH's first all metal aircraft and was a twin engine, high wing airliner, and there twice as many of them as there were Albatrosses (Albatrii?)

Thanks, Kit, that's exactly the photo I remember!  I can add Albatross to Flamingo and Ensign as aircraft I'd like to do.....some day!

Depending on price I may get the 1/48 Canberra repop, I'd rather a smaller one but based on a couple of hand-me-down 1/72 builds 1/48 may not be too big for me.

The DB5 is something I've wanted since I was a kid, so I'll keep my eye out for it (GOSH I hope it's not a starter kit again!  :banghead:).

Definitely getting the 1/48 Meteor, P-40 and Stuka (loving the engine detail), the 1/72 Be2 and probably the Victor.
