Chris I'm in the same boat really..I'd love to have gone 72nd scale but eyes and hands ain't great anymore so 48th is the way to go .
Annoyingly there's such a huge selection of 72nd scale aircraft out there ..much more than 48th but now here some 72nd kits are as expensive as 48th 
I saw a Hasegawa Su-35 in 72nd scale for $65nz ..I scored a 48th Su-27 for $40 brand new
 and tomorrow I'm getting a 32nd scale Su-27 for $80 ...now I don't know if the dude selling the 35 is living in dream land with his price but it's not the first time I've seen prices like that so funnily here you can get 48th for less than 72nd 
Figure that one out

I'm  not about to even consider 1/48 and larger. Nothing against such scales per se but, for practical (cost/display space) reasons, I will stick with 1/72. I feel it's the most practical scale even for large aircraft. I do however have several 1/48 & 1/32 aircraft which, were all gifted to me . I don't really buy the "old hands/eyes" etc argument. I'm 66 by the way.......!  
Seriously though, I do get why people might want to "upscale" but, to me, anything bigger than 1/72 just has more potential for stupidly small parts and over complicated assembly that even my (thankfully still very good) fingers and eyes cannot handle!

That's a fair comment, but I can see why a diehard modeller faced with declining eyesight issues would want go up a scale.

My own modelling is, like many others, is very firmly rooted in 1/72.  But I accept that moving to 1/48 may occur in the future (I'm just a bit younger than you) as I  wouldn't want to give up what is a lifelong hobby.

Incidentally, I had recent cause to build an Airfix 1/48 Hurricane I (the current iteration) and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Last built in that scale in or around 1982!

  Yes. And, I totally accept why people will want to upscale.It's their prerogative and, I respect that. As I indicated, I do have several larger scale kits ; 1/48 Airfix Blenheim, 1/32 Revell BF-110C , Revell 1/32 JU-88  , Revell 1/32 Typhoon (the proper one, not that prop driven thingy and, Airfix 1/24 Hurricane. These were all recieved as gifts and, will certainly be built.
Last 1/48 kit I built was about 1990. It was the excellent Revell F-89D.years ago.

So far I've built 1/72 jets and 1/48 WW2 fighters and such. Display space is really getting to be a problem. Either retire a few old builds or get more cabinetry. Eyes and fingers are doing well except once in a while my hands shake a little when things are stressing me out. Some people have tried to suggest I have Parkinson's but doc says I'm fine in that regard. I'll stick with the doc on that one. Possibly med issue but it rarely happens. More likely people pi$$ing me off. I wish I could find better cockpits for many of these older 1/72 kits. Everything else can be pretty good but the cockpit looks shabby. I know I can get seats but the rest looks like crap. Oh well, polish my scratch build skills.

I've been a die-hard 1/72 modeller since the year dot, it's really the only scale where you can build a practically sized collection of most types. Having said that, I do airliners in 1/144 because at one time that was the ONLY scale they came in.

The ongoing 'drift' to 1/48 looks like 'enemy action' to my cynical mind, driven jointly by the manufacturers, who can make more money from the same amount of research and very little increase in tooling and material costs, and by the magazine publishers who see continuing advertising on the part of said manufacturers if they push 1/48 as well.

You are all quite welcome to build in whatever scale you like.  But just remember that as far as aircraft are concerned 1/72 is the one true scale...
 

...although I do have a growing collection of 1/144 larger planes and ekranoplan to build - mainly because of their size when finished.

Biggest kit in the stash is a 1/8 Lindberg Fiat Dragster.

Completely agree on that one. Said "drift" of course could just as easily blow up in their faces as fewer and fewer kits become available in what is still the most widely used modelling scale. They could alienate a significant part of their customer base. 1/72 is, for me, the most practical scale.
