The LIDAR scanning that Airfix have introduced should help with that.  All going well, it should make for ultra accurate models.  There's still potential pit falls to watch out for such as changes to preserved aircraft, misinterpretation of any reflections etc.

It should also stop any arguments about shape etc..... but my cynicism says it won't.

That's why we are rather thankful Airfix have chosen to do a new HC4 kit and replace their rather dated Sea King kit with a new accurate tooling. The only trouble is I can see them doing the RAF HAS3 version later, but I doubt they will go back and do a proper original Sea king HAS1,2,5 or 6 in its intended role as an ASW Helicopter.

But Colin Frieghtdog will sort all that lot out for us, I'm sure.

Not to mention shaded areas where the LIDAR can't see part B for part A.....

It's a good tool and I'm glad they're using it, but it's not a magic bullet. Thankfully, they seem fully aware of that and are emphasising the need for skilled post-scan clean-up and checking.

Revell ran into that with their Trabant model. They created an accurate copy of a car they'd found, only to have the JMNs come out of the woodwork in force after the launch. As it turns out, the car they copied had been in an accident, and had one of the front wings replaced with one from a different model year.

The problem with modelling ANY Trabbi is that they're all different. 

The Duroplast body panels tend to bend and warp yet still maintain their strength as they're attached to a relatively strong steel monocoque.

Revell ran into that with their Trabant model. They created an accurate copy of a car they'd found, only to have the JMNs come out of the woodwork in force after the launch. As it turns out, the car they copied had been in an accident, and had one of the front wings replaced with one from a different model year.

Another Revell kit was the Gannet.  Minor omission, the preserved aircraft was missing it's instrument coaming, and Revell faithfully recreated all the instruments backs on the panel!  There was a lot of debate about the radome and it's rear lower fuselage on Britmodeller, but I think these have been put to bed now.

Airfix had trouble with their Mark I tank.  It's marketed as such, but doesn't actually represent a Mark I.  They guys at Bovington obtained a Mark II and added the steering gear from an old Mark I.  This was lost to time and Airfix copied it pretty accurately and in good faith and it got pulled apart when accurate plans of the Mark I, and the curators at Bovvy said oops, forgot to tell you that!  And even then, you can't build it as a standard Mark II because it was converted to a supply a tank and then had replacement sponsons added when preserved!  So it is accurate, if you want to create the representative Mark I that was displayed at Bovvy.  And it's changed again as they obtained an actual Mark I later...
