I remember doing that aircraft from the 1989 tooling with a lot of Aeroclub upgrade bits and a Modeldecal sheet.

That's 107 XV358 on the Model Decal sheet

I knew it was one from Eagle.  It might still be in the loft at me Mam's, albeit in bits.

Not quite relevant, but during a conversation with a mate yesterday, he mentioned that he'd had a devil of a job building the CMK Buccaneer - until he replaced the resin fuselage upper with the upper from the 1989 Airfix kit, whereupon it fitted perfectly!

I have one of each in the stash so will give that a go. Thanks for that Lee.

Further fondeling looking at the sprues I realised that there was a second set of wing tips provided, also the breakdown of the parts could allow for at least an after market conversion set to produce an S.1 conversion set even if that's not a future idea that Airfix have to do.

P.S. Any good referrences for serial numbers and Fleet numbers together along with the ship/shore base at any time as I intend to just change a minimal amount of the kit decals rather than to build mine as a pure stock item.

S2 to S1  conversion, not really ideal for conversion, the engine shape differ from the intake to the wing where at the wing route their are additional intakes, safer to just get the resin S1 kit which is far superior to the CMK S2 which have a wonderful range of stores and details but the airframe is still an airfix fuselage with the bays and cockpit removed and with some serious shrinkage issues.

As for reference Air Britain's Fleet Air Arm Fixed-wing Aircraft Since 1946 will have every serial with a potted history. The crowood book by Kev Darling may list each aircraft but not sure on history.

The Air Britain's book is going for £195 on Amazon and the Crowood Buccaneer book is going for £90 so unless I get a nice Lottery win neither is going to happen  :banghead:

Forty five minuites later I have bought a copy of the Crowood book from eBay for just under £20

I didn't say they were cheap or readily available, the best reference source was the Blackburn-Buccaneer.co.uk Website but it has now disappeared and the archive sites are his and miss on what data has been salvaged. That did have a history of each aircraft, user and a profile and probably should have been developed into a definitive reference book.

There's quite a few books on the Buccaneer, but none give a really good detailed overview of the type and its usage, they tend to cover its evolution its build, RN service, RAF Service, SAAF service and Gulf War, then survivors and most have a bias towards the RAF so are short on RN service details. It could really do with the AirDoc treatment as per their British Phantoms volumes

What about "Thunder and Lighnings"?  They don't have every serial, and only some histories - but better than nothing, I hope?

So my box from Airfix just showed up, and....

THE ASTRONAUTS ARE MOULDED IN WHITE PLASTIC! - THERE IS A GOD!!!

They're still moulded in bendy, greasy, difficult-to-paint plastic, but at least they're not freaking yellow!

Oh, yeah, there was a new Buccaneer in there too.... ;)

Ah right, just as a makeweight then?  ;D ;)

It was to stop the astronauts floating away. Obviously.

Back in the Dark Ages we'd coat them in white glue prior to painting. Helped the paint adhere better and wasn't quite so prone to coming away every time you handled them.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Now that Airfix have released a new Buccaneer in 1//72 how about a Scimitar in the same scale?

We should be so lucky, but the Bucc is much better known as it flew with the Navy and the RAF, and for a long time too.

I'd rather have an Attacker.
