People say that Britain, the US, Canada, Australia & New Zealand are 5 nations divided by a common language (snip)

And that's not even considering the appropriation of Native American/First Nations/Aboriginal names for places; like in my home state of New Jersey

You forgot Maori ... You really don't want to forget the Maori ... No, really, I mean it!

Having been associated with Maori on exercise, you never, ever get to forget the Maori.  Their own NCOs would wander after dark armed with Pick handles under their jackets because they couldn't afford to forget about the Maori serving under them.    :banghead:

Right as per requests I've separated out the various replies to do with pronunciation. Not sure I've got them all, but I've got most of them.

They can be found here https://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php?topic=48299.0

Easier and way more accurate than me trying to come up with an English "word" (collection of letters, really) that would sound something like the actual name. I think it would've been close to what Kit proposed, though.  My take would've been: Gny-se-now, with the G not being silent.

That's how I learned it from my Dad decades ago and we're not German, nor did he speak German.
He did however work with guys from Germany, the west-coast Canadian pulp-and-paper industry
was full of folks from Europe who had emigrated to Canada in the years following WWII. When I
was a kid in B.C. I regularly heard German, Flemish, Dutch, French, Italian, Norwegian, Polish etc.
accents.
Oh, yeah Welsh, Scots and Northern accents as well.  ;)

It's probably one of the reasons I generally have little problem understanding folks whose first
language isn't English.

The October Airfix Model World which dropped through the letter box this morning has an exclusive build of the new tool 1/72 Bristol Beaufort. Looks very good indeed  Only slightly adverse comment was "the need to keep matting surfaces clean throughout the build", but that's the same with most modern CAD kits. Think they could build some "paint leeway" into the programme ?

I'm actually looking forward to getting hold of one of these.

The Wooksta!

Just noticed the serial of the camouflaged Vulcan option in the forthcoming Airfix new tool - XM594.  Means I don't have to ponce about cutting up serials to get the one I want.

Wonder if the guy who thought of that option is a fan of Alternate History and had actually read "The Last Flight of XM594"?

Shell out £60 on a kit for two serial number decals or make with the scissors?

I'm wanting one new tool Vulcan, which I was going to do as XM594 by playing about with serials.  Fortunately, said serial is in the kit, so that's a bonus.

PR19_Kit

The latest Airfix newsletter goes on at length about Spifire XIVs in racing and display colour schemes, and about the Javelin FAW9(R) in even more schemes, and very good they look too.

But BOTH of them are 1/48 scale, damn it!  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Come on Airfix, get back to your roots, where us 1/72 modellers are! You know you can do it!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

The Wooksta!

Provided that they do a highback 14c and a lowback 14e, I'll be happy.

Although a decent 14c highback is enough - I've a resin lowback spine and converting a c wing to an e is simply a matter of swapping the gun blister and barrels about, and filling a few holes.  Backdating an e is more difficult.

PR19_Kit

The 1/72 PRXIX design would make a pretty good start for them already I'd have thought.

But Kit, there is more money in 1/48.  The whole design & production process costs the same as 1/72 but you can charge much more for each kit.

Must admit I'm sorely tempted by the 1/48th scale XIV. If there'd been any shows on I'd probably have bought one.

...but how many actually order and buy the kit?  :o
