Except Spitfires don't have gull wings ---- from just outside the u/c hinge to u/c hinge, the wing is dead straight and perpendicular to the fuselage datum line.

You know what I mean Robert, the quite notable depression in the underside of the Spitfire's centre section has always been called 'the gull wing', even if it isn't really.

The great majority of early Spitfire kits totally ignored this shape and they had completely flat undersides.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Kit

The drawings I got from the RAF Museum show that from the leading edge, the first 2/3rds of the underside of the wing follow the contours of the fuselage's curving underside. The change happens in the last third, where the fuselage curve continues curving up while the bottom of the chord of the wing goes more or less straight back. I agree it does form a sort of  tapering channel where the underside root fairings are attached.

Must admit the one I'm really looking forward to is the new tool Tempest.

Mind you most new tool Airfix kits are a treat nowadays.

What I'm looking forward to is the flood of cheap 2nd hand Matchbox Tempests hitting the market...

I've always liked that kit, basic though it is.

No, II and VI, which makes a nice change.

Absolutely, I've got a pile of them in the stash as they come in handy for some of the Tempest prototypes

Tempest Mk II is one of my favourite aircraft. Was looking forward to the promised AZ kit, but it seems to have disappeared from their future releases.

And that's because they are KP tooling's not AZ so were never there in the first place  :banghead:

Wishful thinking on my part, still I'll get one to see what they are like.

There's a real Mk.II that has been recently restored to flying condition. It's an ex-IAF aircraft but it hasn't flown yet, the final bits & pieces are being put in.

Imagine they'd have dumped the gull wing from a Spitfire! Torches and pitchforks, I'm telling ya!).

With some of their earlier ones they did just that! And torches and pitchforks were the mildest of levels back then.....

Except Spitfires don't have gull wings ---- from just outside the u/c hinge to u/c hinge, the wing is dead straight and perpendicular to the fuselage datum line.

IIRC, the original Spitfire design, the Supermarine Type 224, did indeed have gull wings - almost Ju-87 looking ...  ah, yes - found a picture.  Not joining the argy-bargy, just pointing out a nit ...

Comparing this to the late marks, the Mk XIV and onwards, it's fascinating how fast evolution went during the war, don't you think?

Its at my local airfield. Sywell is becoming somewhat of a mini warbird hub these days.
The Tempest was "rolled out" last week. she looks stunning in the few photos that ive seen of her.
I always hope for the best.

I have to agree Martin, late WWII Brit fighters have been my absolute favorites for years, I really would like to see this one fly someday, along with the XP-82 ----

Very much so, it's just a total shame that it takes war to do this  :-\
