My quick take on a dedicated Reno style racer but keeping piston engines (in this case Jumo 222s):

BTW,

I seem to recall reading a few years back that Howard Hughes (or maybe someone else) was interested in getting one of the captured Do-335s for use as a race aircraft.  Can anyone confirm/enlighten?

Thought the twin seater Do 335 could use a different, more stream-lined canopy.

And how about a jet-engined version? Over/under Lightning-style!
The rear should be just about large enough to house two BMW 003s. The nose could be used for heavy armament or an air-intercept radar (FuG 240 "Berlin" or the like).

Cheers,
Moritz

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

I like the look of the jet one but it would be a bit of a tail sitter I suspect (the Do335 always looked like it was about to squat IMHO).  Perhaps a Zerstorer with four 30mm in the nose to compensate?  I'd also tend to go with a bottom and two smaller side intakes - the bottom one for the lower engine and the two small side intakes for the top one.  Perhaps with a Fw190 style bubble canopy?

Guys, have a look back on page 1 & 2.

That'd be Griffon engined then?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

It's more likely that they'd retain the annular radiator rather than going to the massive rework
required to mount radiators in the wings. That's
a lot of structural modification and plumbing.

It'd more likely look like a Shackleton rather than
a Griffon Spitfire.
