This is a Romanian TAB-79. Basically a shortened, 4x4 TAB-72, which itself is a not-exact copy of the BTR-70:

Replacement for BRDM-2?

Makes me want to put a GROM-1 module on it...... that one is, IMHO, one of the best overhead weapons modules so far......
To the individual soldiers, *everything* is a frontal assault!

I was surprised to see that there was no current topic for discussion on this subject.  Since they are all basically the same type of vehicle in size shape and function we can put them all together for the sake of continuity.

Trouble sleeping last night had me thinking about odd things again, and the idea of a smaller version of the BTR-XX series came up.  At first I was thinking that it might be neat to try chopping out four of the wheels to create a 4X4 vehicle but there would not be much room left for any crew if that were to happen.  So the next best thing was to remove just two wheels (your choice) and chop the vehicle down just a bit to come up with a smaller vehicle for reconnaissance duties or convoy security.  Something that did not need to haul around a squad of infantry, just enough room for a crew of three or four if you squeeze in.

So a quick search on-line resulted in a small image to modify and the end result is attached for your viewing pleasure.  I thought it would be best to include the full size vehicle for comparison with the smaller conversion.

And a 10 wheels XL version?
You know it is easy, take 2 kits (16 whells total) and build a 6 w and a 10 w

A BTR with a T-72 turret! Sorta like the B1 Centauro!

EDIT:

Mixed up a little something with MS Paint! Don't know whether the proportions are right, but I think it looks cool.
The BTR-72:

Maybe a BMP-3 turret?

Just call me Ray

I looked at the dimensions real quick and it actually seems plausible.

Don't do a BMP3 turret though - the BTR-90 already makes that one a non-whiff :p

The turret would be in the middle, like the 120mm mortar versions, because BTRs have their engine/engines at the back.

^ Yeah, upon some further reflecting I noticed that too. Only occurred to me when I had it finished.  :banghead: Remembered that I had a problem with the exhausts on a Zvezda BTR-80A.

So, this is the revised BTR-72. I also deleted the gun ports on the sides and the spare track links on the turret.

Ray, you're right about the BTR-90. I just read the upgraded BTR-90M features the BMP-3 turret. I believe I read the 100mm gun is a low-pressure gun, so I think the dedicated tank destroyer with T-72 turret would round off the family.

There you go!

Okay, now it's getting sillly...

BTR-120 - 12x12

After some silliness something more likely to be of real use. The turret of a 2S6 Tunguska on the road-mobile chassis of a BTR-80. Closes the gap between the tracked 2S6 and the Pantsir on an un-armoured 8x8 truck chassis.

BTR-72 FTW!

I may do something similar with my 72nd Stryker...

Found this while looking for other stuff (Vikr ATGM for another project). Seems Weaver was spot on regarding the hint to put the turret in the middle.

The other night I ended up researching the military of the UAE (I got off on a tangent after reading that one of their Emirs had died).  Anyway, the UAE buys equipment from all over, so that if diplomacy sours with one nation, they can still get hardware from someone else.  One vehicle used by their army is the Ukrainian BTR-3U APC.

It looks like a derivative of the BTR-series of vehicles, but these are actual new-build machines from a new design.  Standard armament fit is a 30mm cannon, 7.62mm co-ax and up to 4 Konkurs (AT-5) antitank missiles.

I find myself dubious of the claim that it is entirely new build - the BTR-4 is more new-build because of the modified forward hull - the BTR-3U while it may be ground up new machine, is very very closely built off the BTR-70/80 design.  The turret style is relatively new, for a certainty, though, and the Russians have been looking into similar designs like with the BTR-T concept, granted the BTR-T is a whole lot beefier.

Still looks pretty cool, for a certainty.

You know, the Tungusaka BTR marriage looks equally interesting, but I'm finding myself wondering if it wouldn't require a little stabilization when it prepares to fire - I know the Pantsir Truck mount does, but the Track mount that can be acquired is fully able to fire on the roll.

Interesting ideas

I can see the second one down being used for expeditions in all sorts of inhospitable places. Perhaps with "BBC-Natural History Dept : Bristol" painted on the sides ?
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

There's a RW bus-bodied BTR... the GAZ 59032 which seems ideal for that sort of expedition.
I can see something like that being used for tourist trips trundling around Antarctica.
