Sometime ago at an airshow at Cold Lake Alberta (1997-98 I think) there was a flight demonstration by a test F-15 which could operate at very high angles of attack, it wasn't the one with canards though but when it landed it was able to hold this angle of attack quite easily while rolling slowly down the runway on just it's main wheels.  I've got some photos of it which I took with my Olympus OM-10 and should be on a CD, I just need to find the CD  :banghead: (I had them uploaded on my old computer but that gave up the ghost a long time ago)

I would have thought whatever they were testing could work for a carrier orientated F-15.

Maybe an F-15E ACTIVE?  IIRC, part of the ACTIVE programme was to start and land on rather short runways.

Don't get me wrong - I'm sure it is technically possible to get the F-15 (in some form) to operate from carriers, it's just EXTREMELY unlikely at thisa stage in its carrier though.  If India was willing to pay the costs of adapting it for such, they might as well buy Super Hornets which are already here and far better equipped sensor/system wise.

I know. ;) Just for sh!ts 'n' giggles. That's why I added the -emoticon. On the other hand, you had carrier-capable Eagles in your Whaling War story (which is very cool, BTW ), so I might add those to my Japanese story-line as well.

Sorry to resurrect this thread from the grave, but the F-15 is one of my favourite fighters.

I've never seen a pic of the F-15U, or the XX for that matter. I was wondering if such a beast exists, as it's very much relevant to my interests!

Silverfox,

I have two images of the F-15U,

The first image here, is a line drawing of the F-15U

The second image, here, is apparently a computer generated rendering of what the F-15U would have looked like in action

That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.

I've always been surprised that the German Air Force didn't get F-15's, something along the Japanese lines I thought would have been good.

Luftwaffe Eagles would have been cool! Jburch did an awesome profile of a Luftwaffe Eagle in Norm '81 colours HERE ON ARC:wub:

They looked at it in the early 80s as a potential replacement for their F-4s (along with F-20 & Mirage 2000 and possibly F-18, from memory) but in the end opted for the much cheaper option of upgrading the Phantom.

You also need to remember the Bundesluftwaffe had restrictions placed on it in regards defending its own airspace - I believe this may have dissuaded the selection of the F-15.  Mind you F-15A would look good in Iron Crosses!

Yeah, an F-15 that isn't allowed to carry BVR missiles is gilding the lilly somewhat - although that restriction is now lifted.

I do have a picture somewhere of an F-15 in the 70s carrying French (!) roundels during a European sales tour.

Cheers, guys!

Yeah, I was thinking about that LOAN nozzle as well, but I thought I'd go a bit farther.   Are the LOAN nozzles thrust-vectoring?
I hope the F119s fit, but I'm not sure. Some test-fitting with 1/72 kits will be necessary.

Gary F's fantastic F-2 PROFILES () have F-2s with DSI inlets and LOAN nozzles. Those inspired me to take aboard upgraded F-2s. Maybe the DSI inlet and the exhausts of the F-22?

Actually, you want a combination of the LOAN nozzles for reduced observables and AVEN nozzles for the vectoring.  For those unfamiliar with the acrnyms, LOAN = Low Observables Axisymmetric Nozzle and AVEN = Axisymmetric Vectoring Exhaust Nozzle.  If I was going with the F110, I'd go with the upgraded version in the F-16E/F that's rated at 32,000 lbt in full burner though I do believe P&W offfered a competitive version of the F100.

Good to see you back Evan  ;D
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Seconded - the amount of posts/questions I've seen lately and thought "if only Evan were here".....
