While I am waiting for some stuff for the other helo builds to see if they will go in the direction I want,a question/some help please....

I have an Airfix 1/72 Hind and want to navalise it.....I would like some ideas as to the crew stations in the greenhouse part of the fuselage....I don't plan on having the gunner.......two pilots obviously......was thinking of some sort of systems operator as well......stations in the rear would help as well....armament will be torpedoes....there will be a sonarbouy chute as well.....I have been looking at various naval helo's on the net as well so got a rough idea what I want..........

many thanks for any help...............

Hank,  I did some profiles of naval configured (Rescue & ASW) Hinds a little while back.  They're in my photobucket account.  As for modelling, if in 72nd, the Airfix SH-2F Seasprite had some nice internal details that might migrate across as did the Revell Sea King.

Mav....seen them.....they are great......thats part of the inspiration......for the outside, working on the stuff you can see in the cockpit n through the open sliding doors......

Hank, the two kits mentioned have seats, scopes and other internal details that could be seen through open doors.

I remember that in a Clint Eastwood movie "Firefox" ther's a Mil Mi-24 Hind A  over the platform in a soviet ship.

I will have a look and see if I can find the internal anti submarine bits from my Kaman seasprite, if I can you can have them Hank. I should have some bits from a couple of Seakings and Seahawks that might be of use to stick on the outside too.

One thing to do will be loose one of the main body doors and change it to a sliding version with the other one you'll need to do a crew access door in a similar manner to the Hip or with it being a hind loose it altogether and just have a couple of the escape hatch windows.

Have a look for a Revell Seaking as that has the ASW consoles that could be used, ideally you could do with a Seaking Commando HC4 conversion, then you can build the Seaking as a Junglie and use the ASW bits on the hind, including using the sponsons as a basis for new ones for the Hind ala Haze.

Ah........many thanks.....I was debating re;fixed landing gear like later Hinds (Mi-35..?) or alternate fixed like Ka 27/29 with a four point wheel....two in the front on either side of the fuselage and external braced at the rear.....the bays could then be used for something else......possibly floatation bags along the side at various points...... ;D

The main landing gear bays could make a decent area for a sonobuoy dispenser!

For reference, here's my Mi-24K I did years ago.  Here's the thread for it.

Dear all......I have some gubbins now and a reasonable idea on what I wanna do....some Q's though......1) I'd be grateful for anyones input on crew stations in the nose.....as is,there is a station up front for the gunner and pilot n co-pilot behind.....no need for a gunner so do I keep the station and add a radar shroud/some electronic stuff.......or move the pilot n co-pilot forward n have a station behind them or some form of bulkhead with access to a slightly larger cabin with all the scopes/electronic stuff.....?.......2) If a helo has one of the towed (?) MAD things mounted on the sidewould it also have a dipping sonar..? Is a sonobuoy dispenser needed...? I notice not all ASW helo's have the board dispenser like the Kaman Seasprite n navy Blackhawks.....the Hind is big enough to carry them all.......it will be for a western navy if that helps anyone thinking of contributing......many thanks.......H

If Iwas going to do one of these, I would put the pilot up front, giving him/her a full view of the surroundings. The navigator can take up all the room behind him, with perhaps a co pilot/weapons officer in there somewhere too. The anti sub electronics and associated gubbins would be better in the former troop compartment, this could have 2 crew operating the equipment one using the sonar MAD equipment the other launching the sonar buoys/dipping sonar etc. You could build into the lower rear fuselage a sonar buoy launcher, similar to that on the SH-2 and SH-60.
I think if you just have a right good look at some pictures of how some western anti-sub helicopters are set up, and then do your on interpretation of that. It can't be wrong on here can it??
