The spatted one might make a good dive bomber/scout for the Hindenberg Greg
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Isn't the Ar-196 the only aircraft Kriegsmarine got to operate under their own banner (as opposed to the projected conventional carrier-borne aircraft)?

What if their came up with something like the cruiser Mogami or battleship Ise or Hyuga?  A heavy scout/commerce-raider with a lot of "reconnaissance planes"?
To the individual soldiers, *everything* is a frontal assault!

The Arado Ar-296 was an attempt to improve top-speed performance of Kriegsmarine shipboard aircraft. The goal was to transform the Ar-196B into a float fighter capable of intercepting Allied patrol aircraft such as the Consolidated Cataline flying boat.

Arado prepared a prototype Ar-296A by rebuilding an Ar-196 prototype as a single-seater. The Kriegsmarine was not impressed with performance gains and the type was rejected. This led to the Ar-296B proposal mating the basic airframe with a DB-601A inline engine.

The Ar-296B powerplant and cowling were to come from an Arado-built Bf-109E-2. To ensure maximum possible top-speed, the Ar-296B would be able to discard its twin floats. This, it was believed, would permit one-off interceptions at higher altitude.

Again, the concept was rejected as having insufficient performance. Nor was the Kriegsmarine willing to regard shipboard aircraft as 'disposable'. Arado's final variation on the float fighter theme was the Ar-296C proposal.

For the Ar-296C, the airframe was cleaned up, the floats were fixed, and the engine coolant radiators were relocated the into the float strut leading edges. This fighter was submitted to the Luftwaffe as a potential convoy escort for use in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.

Why not a single central float, with a large streamlined fairing plus retractable wing floats, a'la the various Japanese later floatplane fighters?   This could form the basis of the Ar296D :)

A long time ago I wanted to create some German carrier-based aircraft to go with my "Furashita's Fleet" imaginary ships, and I created a light scout/dive-bomber from an Arado 196 (merely putting wheels on it, a bomb crutch, and a tailhook). It's kinda like the Japanese Ki.51 "Sonia"--not a heavy-duty bomber, but part of the anti-shipping "guerre de course" idea of interrupting trade on the seas. My cruiser-carrier hybrid "Graf Fitti" would carry some of these to scout out enemy merchant vessels and bomb them if they didn't halt (or used their wireless to cry for help):

My mind is like a compost heap: both "fertile" and "rotten"!
