One for the CGI experts:-

A Lightning in NASA livery, camera equipped to act as a chase plane for Saturn 5 and Shuttle launches . At  the climb rate of the F6, it should just about manage to provide useful data.

Admittedly, this is a bit "Alien Space Bat" territory, but think of all of those JMNs having a collective apoplexy at the thought.

Love the idea, definatly off beat a Saturn 5 chase plane

Do it! The rocket-boosted F-104 would also be plausible for this.

Someone design me the paint job and I'll have a go at the model.....

It would have to be displayed vertically, of course

Great idea!

As an alternative, you could do the same thing with one of Freightdog's SR.177s....

The colour scheme would vary over time, probably polished metal with dayglo areas and NASA fin-flash to start, going to the Blue-and-white scheme in later life.

I think the Lightning would look wicked in a variation of the Skylancer scheme, with polished metal in place of the white:

Nice idea.

Something else to consider might be to replace one avon with a rocket like I did here:  http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,279.60.html.

That looks absolutely EXCELLENT!

Amazing how a scheme that wasn't designed for it suits the Frightening so well. That's seriously buildable too, assuming you can make the T5 in the first place of course.

Why replace one perfectly good Avon when you could simply strap two rockets underneath?  One of the early P1Bs had a pair of rockets in place of the belly tanks.  If the F6 had the rockets in the back of the large belly tank, with the ADENs in the front replaced with fuel (as on the F2As and the early F6s, it'd be far more feasible.

Even better, why not stick the rocket pack underneath the EE. P6 single engined Lightning?

As for the scheme suiting the aircraft, I direct you to photos on t'interweb of various Lightning F1As flown by 56 Sqn in the early 60s and the F6 flown by 5 Sqn before the unit disbanded.  We've seen a variation on it which all Lightning fans love.

Couldn't agree more, indeed I saw the ones you mention for real when they were current. But that doesn't stop me appreciating how well the F-5D scheme suits it as well.

What I mean is that you've seen a similar scheme and love it already, so you're predisposed to liking it.
