I like BIG fighters!! I am about to start on my RAF equivalent to the TU-22 "Drakon". It will based (naturally!) on the TSR 2 in 1/48. I've already decided that a forward swept wing will be nice (or at least the extended outer wings!) together with a sort of cruciform or X tail. The cockpit might be a problem though. I think the crew might welcome slightly better visibility!!

. I can see a fuselage graft of some sort being necessary

Hi Albeback,

Just out of curiousity, how did you do the masking on that Tu-22? I've never been able to do a hard mask without it looking like well, a hard mask.

.The entire camouflage pattern was applied freehand. I drew the pattern on the model using a soft pencil but, there was no masking involved. I don't own an airbrush so, all my models are painted the old fashioned way - with a brush & pot of paint. The only masking I used was on the windows, around the radome and, over the exhausts.

I used to have an airbrush but, I gave it away to a friend years ago. Partly because I couldn't be bothered with all the additional masking.Partly because I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of mixing/thinning tiny batches of paint & constantly cleaning the thing. Mostly however it was because it just didn't give me the same satisfaction as hand painting.I achieved quite satisfactory results but, it just wasn't the same! I don't regret my decision. Personally, I find it rather sad that the emphasis nowadays is amost exclusively on painting by airbrush. The percieved wisdom seems to be that EVERY modeller has an airbrush. Is that really the case? Certainly, how many articles/reviews do you read where the reviewer / modeller painted by hand? Is this another lost art?

I'm too long in the tooth now to change! Lol!! The only spraying I do now is with the good old rattle can .

Airbrush v Paintbrush? Hmmm!That might be a lively discussion on its own!!

Although I own at least two airbrushes and a serious compressor I can't remember the last time I used any of them. As you say, all the magazine articles just ASSUME we're all using airbrushes the whole time (along with doing that damnable pre-shading....!) and never allow for any other methods in their reviews.

Maybe the 'long in the tooth' factor is the decider? I too am waaaaaaay past my sell-by date I'm sure, it's just that we were brought up on brush painting and it's in our blood now.

LoL!! pre-shading?? What's THAT all about?? !!I'm glad to know I'm not the only "heretic" out there! Another thing about painting that REALLY BUGS ME is natural metal!! All these wonderful Alclad type products and yet, once again, the manufacturers produce a product on the assumption that everybody has an airbrush!!
Don't get me wrong. I'm not "anti" airbrush. Far from it. I genuinely admire the skill of those who know how to get the best out of them. However, I think there is a mistaken asumption that somehow owning/using an airbrush makes one a better modeller?

You still see some builds/reviews where the kit has been brush painted. I'm a brush painter and will probably stay that way. It's good enough for me and like you I just can't face the hassel of air-brushing. Thought about it a few times and I know Martin went on a good course but just never got around to biting the airbrush bullet - not my No 1 priority. Must admit I do admire those who do it well

Wow!!

Now, THAT is really something!! I can handle the mottled camouflage ( using the old fashioned cut down almost dry paintbrush!!

) but, I have NEVER tried to brush paint a scheme like that on the JU-88!! Incidentally, I saw the Airfix mag article about brush painting the submarine. It looked good! Think I might just try that!!
