First new project for 2011.

Why not  modernize the venerable E.E./BAC LIGHTNING and let him face the threats of the years 2000???
This is the excuse to let me add at the Lightning some parts stolen from the Tornado.

This is the usual my preparatory drawing:

Take it only as an idea, the finished model could be a little different, however this is the concept.

The first change of mind was replace the Tornado IDS radome with the more modern Tornado ADV's nose.

Dumb Question:  Where is the Air Intake, or am I missing it??

Other than that, I love the idea.

Honestly, in the drawing there is NOT air intake, I forgot it....

The my plan is of to do an air intake as in the F-8 CRUSADER.
If this will be not possible, I have a "B" plan in mind but hope of to be able to do the F-8 intake.

So maybe something like this?

Might be a bit tight for intake air, but don't let reality get in the way of a cool idea .

EXACTLY, this is a possible solution as I have in mind.

Thank You for the drawing.

Another idea might be to use side intakes either like the Rafale or even like the Tu-98:

And one of my first contributions was a three-engined Lightning with a chin intake (bigger radome moved to top of existing intake) for the lower engine and F-106-style shoulder intakes for the top two engines:

This layout could be adapted to a normal twin-engined Lightning too: feel free to nick it if you wish.

AND two seats in tandem and twin fins?

I DO like that, more than a little. Now where are thos old Frog Lightnings I've got hidden away....?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

AND a tailless delta wing..... (well kinda: aerodynamics about like the X-32 JSF)

I'm collecting the bits for one too. Got various Lightnings and F-104s (for the upper intakes) and the canopy will be Javelin T.3. Not sure about the wing: TSR.2 is ideal but.... :o  Another idea is to use a phantom wing: mounted on the sloping sides of the fuselage, the inner portion would slope downwards and the outer portion would be straight...

The fusealge mod is NOT straight forward though: you can't just splice a plate in between the top edges of it, rather you have to rotate the halves around the axis of the lower engine (which means taking a bit off the bottom) then adding partial opposite halves to the inside of the top edges.

Fixed wing or swing-wing?

Swing Wings? I don't like too much this solution.
I'm considering of to use the originals wings but with some variations.

BAC looked at a swing wing design for the Navy, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility

(halfway down the page)

I did a Lightning F7 about 15 years ago.  Updated the radar to Sea Harrier Blue Fox and the engines to RB199s.  Canopy was stripped of it's heavy framing, with a wrap around windscreen.  Sidewinder and Skyflash missiles.

Really fancy doing it again!
