I can (just possibly....) see the logic behind the price of the A Model Tradewind as it has a hand laid fibreglass fuselage etc. But the Dragon Sea King is just exhorbitant for something of that size and for some pretty dubious 'quality' as well. It epitomises the current 'Five Letter Word'. That's G R E E D!

The reality is that every producer prices their product on what they believe the market will bear.  I agree, if you don't like the price, don't buy one.  If that will mean sufficiently fewer purchasers and eventually the producer and/or the distributor will get the message and lower their prices.   Letter writing complaining to the magazines, to the distributors and producers might be a way to tell them of your problem with their pricing.  You'll more than likely get at least a polite response (if your letter is polite) and just ignored but it is more effective than just complaining, Kit.   The problem is, for such a boycott or letter writing campaign to be effective, it must be bigger than just one or even a dozen modellers, it needs to be thousands and tens of thousands of modellers.  Personally, I can't see that happening.

I understand what you're saying Brian and agree on the position 100%.

But while the magazines continue to do these reviews mentioning the poor quality of the kits and ignoring the OUTRAGEOUS price of some of them we're not going to get anywhere. They can hardly say that 'We'll lose the advertising revenue' as you hardly EVER see adverts for Dragon. If Revell and Airfix can produce top quality stuff at the prices they do I can only think that the Oriental companies are just plain GREEDY!

Actually the Dragon Sea King is pretty good quality its the accuracy that stinks. Thats why it was so annoying to see reviews saying how wonderful it looked in the box and how well it went together whilst turning a blind eye to the price and completely devaluing their credibility by having no idea of the accuracy or lack there of !!!.

Well yes, but it was all bundled together in my mind. The price is exhorbitant anyway, but for something that wrong it's robbery.

The same can be said of their other recent output, notably the Sea Venom and Sea Vixen. Detailed, high-quality kits, but very inaccurate and appallingly expensive.

A big part of the problem, I think, is that reviewers get the kits free. If they don't have to fork out for them, the price isn't a factor. Then again, I see plenty of people who will happily shell out huge amounts of money for a kit (eg. Hasegawa 1:48 Phantoms/Tomcats etc at well over £50 a pop) and not bat an eyelid. Then they spend as much again on aftermarket resin to "correct" or "accurize" the kits! I can't understand that, myself, but then I'm not wealthy. If I paid £50 for a kit, I'd expect it to be pretty damn good as it is!

What's actually wrong with it? I thought that the SAM review was actually pretty positive - apart from the missing shroud over the tail rotor drive exit, the only issue picked up was the aerial fit not being correct for a Falklands-era machine (and possibly undersized seats and an incorrect calibre gun (?!) which are mostly hidden inside the fuselage even with the door open)

However, this isn't my area, so are there other issues such as size or outline accuracy? I'm curious because I think that, while  the price is definitely at the very top limit of acceptable, I don't think that it's outrageous and I suspect that the kit may be within my own personal accuracy threshold. (In other words, I'm very tempted to get one  )

Being  one who currently has to watch the pennies,  I'm afraid that this sort of price is out of my league no matter how  magnificent the quality.

I normally wistfully watch the prices on items like this as it climbs above the £100 mark, but surely this is taking the biscuit? Admittedly this one is in 1/48 scale

Okay I know it it's 1/6th scale but even so, I can remember when you could get the real thing for less than that!
