Vietnam FAC's query

Vietnam era FAC aircraft (Bird Dog, O-2, Bronco) seemed to be painted white or light grey. Was this for camouflage from ground fire against the sky, or to make them conspicuous to the fighter-bombers so they didn't collide with them?

Just wondering what the issues were.....

Not sure what the thought process on the camo was but think the white on the top of the main wing was for visibility to the attacking aircraft.

Have seen photos of the O-2 done in camo:

and overall black:

Might find some insite through links on this page.

Always liked this build though not sure if based on a "real" aircraft.

That's exactly it. FAC pilots had basically two concerns: ground fire and the fast-movers.

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

I also think you'll find the camo'd O-2s were O-2B psywar aircraft, not O-2A FACs.

The white upper wings were to be seen by attacking F-4's, F-105's so they would not be shot down or run into!
