HMS Terra Nova

Just started work this weekend on the next subject for the theme, a 1/700 model of the proposed HMS Terra Nova which was to be a dedicated Antarctic Patrol ship to replace HMS Protector. This was designed as an Ice Breaker and drew heavily on the Arctic icebreakers for inspiration. In design its probably akin to a Helca class survey ship but built upon an Icebreaker hull.

More info can be found here :-

http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,8326.0/highlight,terra+nova.html

The model is scratchbuild using the laminated plastic card to create the hull, sections of strip Styrene will be used to create the superstructure and fixtures & fitting will be from aftermarket sets, robbed from donor kits or where necessary scratch built. Photos to follow once the hull is completed. Should be a little different from the usual warships especially in the Antarctic Red hull scheme.

The actual design was cancelled as yet another economy measure and the Danish Ice breaker Anita Dan was purchased and converted to become the infamous HMS Endurance.

On a side note the Navy have earmarked the name Protector again for the next Antarctic patrol ship as its looking for another off the shelf ship to replace the damaged HMS Endurance (ex Polar Circle) which is not worth repairing following its flooding off Chile a couple of years ago.

definately looking forward to seeing this one progress, a nice change from some of the more belligerant modelling subjects

just musing, grey hull or high visibility red like the Endurance (a leftover from its previous Danish scheme?)

best wishes, Joe

Well the artists impressions in the 1964 janes has it grey as per protector, but didn't the Antartic treaty  prompt the disarming of the continent and the use of civilian colours ? The British Antartic Survey team use the same Red scheme on their ships too.

Cool. Look forward to seeing this one. Ice breakers are my new favourite....

Are there supposed to be pics in that other thread ? I can't see any and it would be nice to find out what she looks like. A google search only brings up HMCS Terra Nova.

Me, I'm dishonest, and you can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest.
Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for!!!

Cheers Mike

It looks as if Polar Bear is the only ship currently available and not quite upto requirements, so she'll act as a stop gap whilst the long term future of Endurance is discussed. Sounds like they are giving some thought to refitting Endurance again as that would be cheaper than a new build and the picking off the shelf are a little sparse.

may be this time they will use standard parts which the rest of the fleet uses and not some ultra special engines which no other ship in the world uses, and so is so expensive to replace any parts, but then again its a goverment operation!!!

Cheers Guys, still a bit to do on the hull before starting on the superstructure which should prove intreresting as there are no plan views.

Talked with Joe re the colour scheme and the best bet is to go with the Artists impression as thats how it was envisaged at the time it was to be ordered.

Teeny build you've got going Geoff, makes for an interesting change.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Only minimal progress to report so far, just sorting out the stern before i add the flight deck and can get started on the Superstructure.

Quick update with no Photos as yet as need decent daylight to prevent the flash wasing out the image due to the white plastic card i use.

Anyway the superstructure has been created and fitted, i just need to add the front wall to the twin wasp hanger with its doors and add the funnel & mast to structurally complete the build. Obviously i then have to fit out the ship with all the details and clutter required to make it look the part, but at least the assembly is done
