What now?

Botofucket, er...photbucket wants 400 bucks a year for 3P hosting. Any alternatives?

M

There's been two or three pages of suggestions and discussions about this already here :-

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

I'm paying €25/year for 1 GB of space in which I can host my own website (www.acme-engineering.nl). I upload the photos I want to show to that site. No ads, no changes in URLs that I didn't ask for.

Same for me. I get 25Gb for € 25 a year including my own domain name.

Guys, I want to make an experiment here and please help me with your answers.
I checked my older posts and I can't see the pictures which were stored through/by/on/at Photobucket.

This is a typical example of an old posting of mine:
Spotted this really old what if model in the nice Great War Museum in Caledon (near Toronto, Canada). The text says it all:

End of old post.

I checked the addresses of the photos in my old post and added to each photo-link this:~original.
And below is the result:

Please, tell me do you see any pictures in the first or in the second part of this post.
If you see the second pair with the revised addresses, please do the same trick with one of your photos on Photobucket and see what happens.
One more time:
The old address of the picture was e.g.:
http://i370.photobucket.com/albums/oo141/canso-forum/text.jpg
I manually revised it to:
http://i370.photobucket.com/albums/oo141/canso-forum/text.jpg~original
Cheers!

P.S. I just tried to restore several pictures in my older posts using the above described trick and they are back...at least for now. I could even restore photos, that are not in my Photobucket-library (I have previously copied them from other posts) and they show again!

DogfighterZen

Canso, i've just tried it on one of the locked images on my threads and it seems to work on the preview, i did it on one of the pics and left the others unchanged and i could see the pic in the preview, in the middle of the locked pics. It seems like a nice loophole but it means we'd have to do it to all the pics we've ever posted from there... might be useful for the 2017 Whiffies, at least to get the pics visible in the show thread.
Thanks for sharing that fix!

I can see both of your modified links, yes.

Thanks, Canso. I don't know by what trick of black magic you discovered this, but I tried it on another forum and it worked.
Have no idea how long it will last, but, as Dogfighter wrote, we could at least save the wiffies awards.
Owing to the current financial difficulties, the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice.

So yes, it can be used for the Whiffies 2017 (at least). Just don't delete your photos with PB! ;)

No black magic at all! ;D If you go to your Bucket there are always 4 options under each photo:
1. Email & IM
2. Direct
3. HTML
4. IMG
I copied the "Direct"-address. Then in each and every forum I'm using the "Insert image" button or if there is no button just type img  /img in brackets and insert it. The "Direct"-address has ~original at the end.
That's all. ;)

DogfighterZen

I've always used the IMG link and i just went back to my F-16W thread and modified the link as you said and the images are showing now so i guess it works with any of the links?
I really don't care that much cause i'd already started using Imgur a while ago so i'm not going back to PB anyway, it's just a shame that so many pics are blocked... the guys at PB must've had a cerebral diarrhea when they thought of doing this wonderful change... :banghead:

 Yep!
But in their own explanation they wrote:

What is 3rd party hosting?
Photobucket defines 3rd party hosting as the action of embedding an image or photo onto another website.
For example, using the <img> tag to embed or display a JPEG image from your Photobucket account on another website such as a forum, Etsy, eBay auction listings, blog, etc. is definitively 3rd party hosting.

And more from PB:
Direct link: This is the actual web location where your image is stored. Use this link for sites that ask you to insert an image from a web URL.
*** Note! If a forum or blog asks you to use a direct link to embed your photo, the photo may or may not display at full size, depending on the forum and its posting guidelines. Some forums resize images automatically! ***
IMG code: Use this to embed your photo or video on bulletin boards and forums that do not allow you to input HTML coding. Your media will display at full size on the page you create.

So folks, don't use the <img> tag! ;)

seadude

I used both Direct and IMG links on a lot of pics on lots of forums and sites I went to and I still got shafted by PB!  I'm not wasting any more time or effort with PB and I would hope nobody else does either. But if others want to fix their links and continue using PB, then more power to ya. I've had it with PB!  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

Or don't use PB at all... like i said before, i' not going back anyway, the ads alone made me dump PB, it took me almost 10 minutes to upload a few images...  :banghead:
EDIT: I've tried the Direct link, doesn't work, just shows the link itself so no use for forums...

What a fantastic example to choose.  ;D

And it works.  I've just gone back through the Wrathchild thread and modified all the links.  It's quicker than replacing them with links to another photo host but it's still a PitA and I won't be doing it to everything and definitely won't be going back to using pb.

You'll need to copy the direct link and then put it between
You can type that or use the button at the left hand end of the second row of buttons above (below B for Bold).

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

zenrat industries:  We're everywhere...for your convenience..

DogfighterZen

Ok... never did that before... Now, why do they tell folks the IMG link is the one to use on forums and then do this without any warning?!? Maybe trying to get some suckers to pay the stupid amount of money they're asking for it...

Thanks, Fred.
But i just don't wanna have to deal with PB again, those ads... i close one and another one comes up right away in it's place... then there's another page that pops up and then it takes forever to load the pics already on there... the upload is also very slow.
Sorry, just doesn't cut it for me anymore, i'm done with it, Imgur is fast and pop up free and i don't have to insert those brackets, just a simple copy/paste affair so less time consumed.
