Late Pitcairn concepts.

SGTA= submerged gas turbine autogiro

CFA = cruise fan autigiro

All feature tip drive via turbine exhaust gases ducted through the rotors for hover, take-off, climb and landing.
The cruise fan pods were to tilt down 45 degrees for take-off.

How about some steampunkery (I presume it's allowed isn't it?) Here's a steam-powered skycycle-style personal helicopter from an excellent web comic called Freak Angels. There are lots more images of it in there, both before and after the page I'm linking (not hotlinking the pic since I presume they'll be touchy about copyright):

might bring out a 1/72 F-14 Tomcat and attempt to make one of these (would look awesome next to my 1/144 machine  ;D ).

We don't just embrace insanity here.  We feel it up, french kiss it and then buy it a drink.

Just thought I'd throw in this - a VTOL build I did a few years ago.  It's a Nanchang Q-12 of the PLAAF, used as a close air support fighter.  At first glance it seems to be a copy of the Yak-38, but note the larger wings, different nose and refuelling probe.  The background story of it is that the PLAAF followed the development of the Yak-38 closely, and recognized its potential despite is apparent failure as a weapons platform.  They bought the design, and spent a few years developing it into a potent air-to-ground platform that would rival the AV-8B in its CAS capability.  I was supposed to put a laser rangefinder window on the flattened duckbill nose but I forgot about it.  I guess I could make a trip out to get some gold foil...

Note: Why I didn't model the intake doors open I have no idea, as there was detail in there, as I had modelled the blowout doors open.  I'll just chalk this up to hydraulics  ;D

The top two are fairly conventional, but the bottom two are bizarre.

I've always liked the quad rotor layout in theory, because it does away with the need for cyclic pitch control: just vary the collective pitch of the individual rotors front-vs-back or left-vs-right. Use longitudinal vanes under each rotor for yaw control.

(This thing is rare example of a "deconstruction kit": it came ready-assembled, but every time I touch it, a new part breaks off!  :rolleyes:)
