Found this lovely 1/72 MAUS in their 1/72 scale armour contest.  Simply LOVE the camouflage.  Made me laugh out loud.

Some clever and amusing quote goes here.

Another nice flying wing/awaca/torpedo bomber?  Lovely!

Omig... Just had an eyegasm!!!

This is one of the greatest whiffing ideas I've seen this year! Now what would the Navy have called this beauty? A Northrop AEW patrol bomber? Let's see... it would have been a PBT-2W!

- "PB" for patrol bomber (the Navy never had "pure" bombers per se, anyway)
- "T" for Northrop (not used after 1941 but anyway...)
- "-2" for the second variant (we can assume that there could have been a "-1" which was a regular patrol bomber version)
- "W" to indicate an AEW role.

And in case this was a prototype, it would have been the XPBT-2W... (don't you just LOVE those old U.S. Navy designations?!? Well I do, a sure sign that there must be some element of madness in me...  ;D). And now for a popular name... the MANTA seems an obvious choice for a manta-ray-shaped aircraft...  ;)

Back in the 90s, Glen Broman of IPMS USA did a hilarious compilation of Flying Wing designs, taken from a thread on the old RMS model group (remember RMS? Ah yes, the great Flame Wars of the 90s...warm happy memories).

Here it is:

There's sone great ideas AND some comedy gems in there, such as:

RS49G: This was a reconnaissance/strike version powered by six GE YJ93-GE-3 continuous afterburning engines. The RS49G was the first version to reach sustained Mach 2 flight. It was, however, hampered operationally by extremely short legs, having an unrefueled range of approximately 40 city blocks.

EC49Q: This was an offshoot of the Wild Weasel. The first operational test of this aircraft in Nevada in 1978 resulted in a major power blackout over most of the Midwest. The Air Force cover story claimed that the blackout was actually caused by a UFO.

The B49H was first used for low level penetrations of North Vietnamese airspace during LINEBACKER II and flew over 700 sorties against the Hanoi-Haiphong area with amazing accuracy at night. Despite going "downtown" at low level, only two were lost to ground fire and one was lost to a really tall Banyan tree.

A B49J is credited with destroying two MIG 23s in the landing pattern at Ras Sulieman airfield in Iraq. One was destroyed by a Sidewinder missile and the pilot of the second MIG was observed staring intently at the B49J over his left shoulder as his aircraft slammed into a telephone pole.

the AC49E "Bad MoFo", piloted by CPT GR "Bad Attitude" Broman was credited with destroying an entire regiment of Iraqi T-72s of the "Hammurabi" division in a single pass. During one of his briefings, Gen. Schwarzkopf referred to this mission as "the Mother of all drive-by shootings".

I've always wanted to do the entire list, but space prohibits it. If somebody did an affordable B-49 (of B-35) in 1/200 scale say, I'd be all over that like a pitbull on a porkchop.

Oh yes, that's the backstory to end all backstories! It's been a fave on my browser for many years now.

I took and ran with the PBT story, one of my very earliest whifferies. I don't know if I have that story still in my files, but I'm certain it is out there somewhere in the electronic realm.
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

That B-49 thread was superlative.  It inspired many thoughts whiff wise back in the day.

Some whacky ones here!

That delta Tiger Moth is a total hoot!  ;D

And the Shuttle with the interrior wing structure was on the NASA SIG stand at Yate last weekend, superbly done it is too.

Only the Fokker and the Tiger Moth are really zany... the rest are pretty "normal" I'd say.

I'm absolutely in love with the half transparent Space Shuttle. As a kid it would have been a dream model for me. Does that actually exist in kit form??

Yes, it's made by 4D models; here's the Amazon US link: http://www.amazon.com/John-N-Hansen-26116-4D/dp/B00133IUO6
