McColm

Hi,
You could visit places that are connected to my surname - McColm.
Inchcolm or the Isle of Colm as its known on some maps. Fortified during both World Wars to protect the city of Edinburgh by sea attack. It has an Abbey St Colm or St Columbia and remains of some tunnels, you'll need to catch the ferry just by the Firth of the Forth.

Or Rosyth Naval base. Pitreavie Castle (large mansion) has been redeveloped and the RAF/NATO base sealed off in 1996.
RAF Turnhouse was closed in 1997 and is now part of Edinburgh Airport. A flying school use the former RAF buildings and the rst of the base has warehouses built on it.

Another place is Kilmacolm which is a small town in Inverclyde.

In a desperate attempt to drag this thread back into  focus, can I suggest a visit to the Tain area. When I was up that way earlier this year, there was a surprising amount of various Euro-air forces  out to play on the Tain ranges

How near can you get to the ranges now? It looks from Google Earth as if the old road that ran down RAF Tain's main runway is now defunct as the causeway that used to run over the marshland to the east seems to have been removed.

Helping a local farmer to round up a group of  bullocks that had broken through a fence onto the road  got my sons and I a trip on a most insecure tractor trailer through several fields and along ex-RAF concrete  to what he called a "reasonable viewpoint". He was  very pro-RAF, he said, despite the noise they made.  I will dig out my O S map this evening any try to locate the exact spot he took us to.

Heard yesterday that they hired the whole train for just them and their kids, really considerate of them to take over an entire train. Might have been an extra train I suppose but still is a waste of capacity.

There's always a Hebridean trip to  Barra, land on the beach at low tide.  Or if you have time, head south and do Dumfries and Carlisle air museums.  Or if you have lots  of tome, the Orkney isles are fascinating........but there's an Orcadian on this forum who can describe things better than I can!

You Should definitely head north to the peddie (peddie is orcadian for small) green lsie if you get the chance. There is to many things to list but I will do my best?

I was there last month, and I must agree with the Orcadian gentleman There's lots to do and see.......just so long as you avoid the kamikaze local council pick-up driver in the Kirkwall area!

don't forget to try the local Scottish delicacies -- Haggis & a more recent invention ... deep-fried Mars Bar  ,  or has that been superseded by something else now ?

Two that spring to mind in the North East:

Chip shop in Dunston does a "Folded Pizza Pie", which is a Margerita covered with kebab meat (I'd rather eat dog food), then folded, battered and deep fried.  My arteries are hardening just thinking about it.

Another chip shop, this time in Newburn, does a battered and deep fried jam sandwich.

If you find yourself in Lossiemouth, just about the only military airfield in Scotland where there's any flying going on these days, be sure to visit the Lossiemouth Harbour Cafe. It's down by the harbour (now there's a surprise.... ;)) and their Sunday Breakfasts are awe inspiring!

The weekday ones are pretty good too, as are any other meals you might get there, and well worth any delay to watching Tonkas doing their thing.

Cambletown or Machrihanish is worth a visit, if you are into golf you can get quiet close to the airbase.

Oh yes ... and don't let a Glaswegian give you a "kiss"

We have a local delicacy here called patties, they are mice and tatties deep fried in batter and taste very nice but they do vary a bit in taste between the different chip shops? One of the chip shops do them with haggis and what we call "clapshot" witch is neeps (swede turnips) and tatties mixed together instead of mince and tatties around Burns night.
