The Fairey Albacore was the replacement for the Stringbat, it had a enclosed & heated cockpit and a more powerful engine, but it was retired before the Stringbat during it's service life.

As I've read, it wasn't a truly suitable replacement for the Swordfish, so the Stringbag soldiered on.

Thought this was cool but the F-35 thread remains locked, so here it be

What if the AST21 F-14 upgrade, and the Tomcat tooling, were dusted off and the line reopened? I'm in the process of trying to WhIF up an "Ultimate Nightmare Rebuild Tomcat From Hell Demonstrator" (see the F-14 Tomcat research thread), but it might be a foundation for somebody to improve on... of course, then I'm going to try to improve on your ideas, just 'cuz that's how I roll: "this is good--can I do better?"

Not quite the same thing but I had the Idea of blowing up some F-35 plans and getting a 1/48 Tomcat fueselage and trying to make it all proportional. Like an overgrown F-35 and a Tomcat mixed.

Saab are strongly marketing the Gripen NG. as a common 'affordable' Scandanavian fighter to replace current types for Norway/Sweden/Denmark (Finland is currently looking at the type too as a potential Hornet replacement !)

I've added the wings from the Eurofighter Typhoon to a F-16A on one of my builds and the wings & tail from a F-18 to another F-18. There was a proposal for a carrier deck version of the F-16.

Not quite but not far off...

Considering the Stringbag never got replaced during WWII, sure, why not see it come back.
Not quite as crazy as it sounds - a few years ago, BMW created a fabric covered concept car, but this was a hi tech plastic/aluminium mix, and the car featured the ability to change shape to suit different needs, thanks to hydraulic rams fixed to various points.  How about a next gen strike plane based on that idea?

McColm

Wasn't the "Switchblade " forward and rear VG wing aircraft supposed to that ? Slightly bigger than the First-111 using the forward sweep like a fighter and rear sweep as a bomber.
I saw a zap patch back in the late 80's but as to the aircraft I couldn't say.

Just found this thread.
How about one wing of these?

Now if only H.M. Govt had had the forethought to outfit QE & PoW with cat and trap.

They did at one stage, and then reverted to the Ski Jump bow etc. My old employers were involved in quoting for the electro-magnetic catapult and I went to a few meetings about that before I retired.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

I've been interested in this subject for 8-10 years.
I really can not understand why, in this day and age, U.K.PLC don't buy off the shelf
F/A18 Super Hornet & Growler variants would be the smartest purchase, if MOD/HM Govt had brains in their heads rather than vested interest in out dated aerospace companies and getting directorships once out of power.
F/A18 is a proven 4th gen aircraft, in production. U.K. Armed forces (RAF &FAA) REALLY CAN'T JUSTIFY F35's massive unit price. For the price of two JSF we could get 9 F/A18 including support and armaments fit out. Armaments purchase is an extra for JSF.

wHO THE F**K are we really going to be fighting that can even match an F/A 18?
Most use of airpower is deterrent and force projection.
We want THE ENEMY TO SEE WHAT'S ABOUT TO MAKE THEIR DAY REALLY SHITTY

Ah but they didn't want a steam powered cat. They wanted an electromagnetic cat. Really sensible of them eh??
