Hey all,

Apologies if this was posted earlier.  There has been some talk on rapid prototyping and 3D printing for modeling applications but I believe this is the first company to focus on it for modeling purposes.  What they're promising here is potentially groundbreaking - the ability to make exactly the number needed, with the ability to make changes to the items as needed - with incredible detail and complexity - is certainly something to be excited about.  They're not cheap, but then again what new technology/process is not?  Hopefully they'll do well and I think this company is just a hint of things to come.

I saw a link to this outfit on the Aircraft in Miniature website, apparently they have some super-detailed engines for some of AiM's 1/72 airliner kits.  The cheapest though is over $200 which is about the same price as the kit it's supposed to go on -----  :-X :-\

The neatest one though is the tracked-undercarriage for the 1/72 B-36 kit

The detail level they offer is excellent, but their prices are horrendous. I'd have to check, but that $200 engine set would cost maybe $50 at Shapeways (using the most detailed printing process they offer). It's possible that there's a huge markup to recover the design cost, though. I'll play with this when I finish the parts for the Falcon 9.

The MiG-25 exhausts are comparable to resin ones in price.

I was actually quite surprised about their Jayhawk.  Whilst expensive for a 72nd plastic kit, as Brian points out, the price is quite 'normal' for a resin one.

It looks like they're using Shapeways for their prints, or at least used them for some of the prototypes (the tracked B-36 gear looks exactly like the sample on the Shapeways frosted detail materials page). 3D printing is expensive, but the Click2Detail prices are very high.
