Oops I did it again....x 2!!!

My ''big'' projects are finished...I painted two more backdrops.
As usual, my backdrops were made from large sheets of white foam board painted with airbrushed Model Master enamels.

After I made my newest photobase last year I knew I needed a new backdrop to match it, the pic below shows why. The treeline is way to shallow looking and does not look very much like the edge of a forested area.


Here are the steps in painting this new backdrop...

1. With a rattle can of Testors blue paint I painted the sky color. At the bottom of this pic you can see the can of spray paint and this will you an idea of the size of this backdrop.


2. The rest of the painting was done with the airbrush, here I added the happy little clouds.


3. Here the groundwork has been started...


4. The finished backdrop minus the photobase.


Below is the smaller scale backdrop, this one is about 1/3 the size of the larger one.

After looking at my test pics of the new large backdrop I might have made the painted on trees a little too pale, not a real problem though, I will simply paint more trees that are a little darker that will show up better.

The small backdrop that I put so little effort into looks so much better.

I particularly like this one. If you reworked the upper part of the backdrop to represent an early morning or early evening sky, the bottom part as it is right now would represent fog perfectly.

It looks just like early morning fog lifting or evening fog just moving in. Very atmospheric either way.

Wow, you're the Bob Ross of the What If board! I like the hazy trees. Maybe another line of less hazy trees would look good, but this one works well - it looks like there's a clearing in the forest between the near and far trees.

Many of the store bought scenery backdrops used for model RR layouts are much better than anything I could ever paint but by painting my own backdrops I can paint the type of scene that would work the best for my needs and also I can make whatever size I want. The size of the backdrop is very important because it allows you to place the backdrop further behind the model so the camera will focus on the model and not on the backdrop. I very much prefer the things in the background of my pics to be slightly soft and out of focus and the model subject to be clear and sharp, maybe its not very realistic but it makes for better pics of the models.
On other modeling sites I have seen others use backdrops in their model pics and some are good and others are not so good...the better pics are the ones that seem to use the backdrop placed further away from the model.
