And a few of Gavin's:

saying is something like "Sven didn't know what it was but he hoped it didn't come back for seconds."

The wargame I was telling you about.  The figures are from the Tamiya Pit Crew set.  Most of the rest is scratchbuilt.

More pit crew figures and the Bionic Woman.  Love his little builds including Shep's Lady Be Good.

Think the Troll is a Games Workshop fig.

Farside Caveman by Gavin.

He used the Games Workshop troll to cast up his own pieces for the caveman.  His lovely assistant is put together from Preiser Eve figures.

St. Alvis (the patron saint of WHIF) has influenced my builds in more ways than I can count.  His stuff on ARC the first week of the year always gave me a good chuckle, and often inspired me to move outside of the norm.  Then I found this place, and all connection with reality was lost.  Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd rather not model there.

For many years there were long-running arguments in the two main (UK) wargame magazines. Those who wanted fantasy and SF games included and those who were "serious" gamers. The latter never stopping to realise that ANY deviation from a historic result automatically turned it into a fantasy/ what if game. I.e. there's no point playing an factually historical game as a game.

Got in a real row at my local wargames club eons ago about this. The thing that won the argument was when I suggested most Ancient games were fantasy. I got a lot of shocked looks and then said "ok you tell me Trajan Romans v Third Dynasty Egyptians is not fantasy".

A diorama(s) inside a diorama, that is CLASSIC !

For the Sven one, it reminds me of a "Hagar the horrible" toon I saw once. Might also be a precursor for the second installment of "How to Train your Dragon"...

This is a really enjoyable topic, real treasures in here. Thanks, everyone.

Rat, can't get the link to open.

Yeah, something's screwy. Let me see what I can do.

Okay, here's a safe way: head over to the Aircraft Resource Center, and go all the way to the bottom of the main page to where you'll see all the back issues as HTMLs. Click on 'Jan 10', and then go down to 'Thursday Jan 7 2010', and look for the fifth one down, by Björn Bäcklund. Click on that and be prepared to giggle yourself silly!  ;D

I do have a T Shirt depicting the traditional rise of man picture (you know, the ape, then the ape man, then the not so much ape, and more man, then the man all walking along) with the Homo Sapiens cowering under the crushing foot of a giant and angry robot. Could be a fun little model.

I always like the one where the human guy has turned round with his hands on his hips, and is saying "STOP FOLLOWING ME!"....

We're talking about a bunch who play games with small models of beings that never existed and they're complaining about YOU being frivolous????
Give me strength...........  :banghead:
Absolutely.
There were even suggestions that fantasy and SF games should be the exclusive province of fantasy and SF magazines, while not understanding that by that argument "serious" games should be in the likes of JDW or historical mags: thereby deleting the need altogether for wargames mags.

Fortunately wargaming is considerably less stratified in this regard, but there are still those who hold exclusively to one position or the other.

We had a wargaming club at school, run by the history dept. When Warhammer came in, the teachers said they'd shut the club down if a majority of the games became non-historical. Some of us tried in vain to persuade the (usually younger) Warhammer players to try other things to avoid shooting themselves in the foot, but no, they relentlessly promoted Warhammer until it hit the 80% of all games mark, and then the History staff shut it down, just like they said they would.... :banghead:

I wouldn't have minded so much if the History staff were committed to historical accuracy in the "historical" games, but they were anything but. Instead, they emphasised competition over accuracy or variety: every game had to have balanced forces and a declared, physical objective, and whoever was in the objective at the end of the meeting was declared the winner, even if they were three infantry surrounded by enemy tanks. It was "historical" to have JS-3s and Comets lined up side-by-side track-to-track, but a guy waving an axe around wasn't "historical" if he happened to be green...... :banghead:

Well, paint him blue and claim he's a VERY ugly celt in woad!
Actually, the whole fighting of game involving forces which come from different eras or never met in real life is somethign I find intrisically funny about ancients gaming. Especially since I was once at a tournament (playing Warhammer) and wandered over into the historical area for a bit of a look, and came upon an argument where some one was having to defend his army choice against a hard core JMN - he had six of a particular tank, but his paint schemes matched a point in time when Germany only had five!
There are no good kits, bad kits or grail kits, just kitbash fodder.

I came across people like that which is why I dropped out of active wargaming - that and I was still using WRG Ancients v.4 rules  :banghead:
