Nevertheless, a lot of men went to war that way. I'm sure a modern version that's bigger and softer could be devised. In fact, if it had to have zig-zag edges for stealth reasons, it's have to be bigger to avoid snagging.

The zigzag edges are placed outside the actual door cutout. This way the gap in the outside skin is isolated from the cavity inside the aircraft. So the door aperture wouldn't have to get bigger.

Remember though, You will never need stealth aircraft for the war on terror, even though the biggest success of that war was brought to you by stealth aircraft.

You could easily have a man-size hatch in the floor, or the ramp, for just that purpose, with signature-reducing features around it.

Ask any Second World War parachutist about the famous "Whiteley Kiss"  It happened as you donged your head on the hatch side as you went out. An elderly acquaintance of mine was extremely eloquent about it!

It was caused by the slip-stream.  As you exited the hole in the floor of the transport, it pulled your lower body backward and of course your head came forward.  If nothing else, it ensured that the Dentists were kept very busy providing false teeth for the Paras!  Interestingly, even the post-war Beverley featured the hole in the floor - at the rear end of the tail boom, under where the Loo was (as described to me once by an ex-RAF who I served with in the Army downunder - he never really trusted the hatch latches apparently).

I never knew that until a mate of mine who was in the RASC in the 60's but attached to the Para's out East told me about it. Said it could make things a little draughty when you were trying to get some kip
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Can anyone remember the cartoon "Rocky and Bulwinkle", trying to prevent the spies Boris and Natasha stealing the plans for the HUSH A BOOM, as silent bomb  that P******* off the opposition without deafening people  next door.

But the Bev's para hatch was relatively huge. They could, but rarely did, drop two sticks out of it side by side, and the more usual technique was to drop them alternately, first para from the RH stick, the next from the LH etc. etc.

You can still visit the 'Last Bev' at Paull near Hull, and they usually have the boom hatch open, but with a barrier round it inside the boom as it's a LONG way down!
