That said, I'd have thought that a pure pusher type would have been preferable from an engineering (structural) point of view.

Or a conventional tractor type.

Naaaaah, that'd be just silly! Who'd want to put a propeller on the front;D ;) ;D ;)
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

You can get a significant drag reduction by moving the main wing out of the propwash. You loose a significant amount of control authority by moving the tail out of the propwash. I guess it is an attempt at combining the best bits of tractor and pusher configs... Id have swapped the engine and pilot round though.

Do you know the Belyaev EI (I-370) project?

Interesting wing planform

Yes, it's Belyaev! This is from the man who invented "butterfly wing" and designed the DB-LK!

Would Heinkel's VTOL paper projects fit in here, the Wespe and the Lerche?

Yes ..... but they're too sensible !  ;D

Yes, this design is getting into flying wing country and was a lot like the design of the Avianito Khai -3

this thread begs the question .... just how good/reliable were the coupling joints in the prop-shafts between engine & propeller ??  P-39 pilots were a bit worried about their valuables if something broke

The Gallaudet mailplanes look rather interesting.  Shouldn't be too hard to whiff something going in that direction from a WWI aircraft kit.
Cheers,

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

Caveman

a modern design, a human powered aircraft. Again i think going for minimum drag from the main wing, apparently not using propwash for lift...
