In no particular order, I'd nominate the following ;

Airfix B-29 - The original one with the formation of B-29s being attacked by Japanese fighters

  Definitely a memory jog! The first few years that MPC was reusing Airfix molds over here, they kept the great art- but soon went to those "photos of a built model" covers - yuck.

  Note the Superfortress named for the lost Boeing test pilot Eddie Allen in the foreground, and a Hayate firing 20mm from the nose spinner like a 109' when the tube there was just for the starter truck Power take off shaft to use.

Yes, really was a great box art. I remember  it  and I love the little box of revell like this one also...

Not an expert on Japanese fighters. Was the Hayate the Ki -84? Even if it is a little error , it doesn't spoil the painting.. If I remember rightly, were both the subjects of the Airfix B-29 kit not actually lost on operations.?

  Yes the Ki-84 was the Allied code name Frank and Hayate to their crews (lightning).
It really doesn't spoil the painting at all, I was just getting a bit JMN about it I guess.
Not sure about the fates of the Eddie Allen or the other superfort, but note the camel markings on the nose, these were markers of each time a B-29 was used to fly supplies over the Himalayan "Hump", so it must have been an early 29 based in China.

;D Thanks for the info. I don't think you were being JMN by the way - I didn't know the Ki 84 didn't have a nose cannon!! I've learnt something. As for Eddie Allen, well, I googled it!! It crashed following serious combat damage & was written off. Fortunately, the crew  survived. Sadly though, the same cannot be said for "Joltin Josie". She was lost with her entire crew when she crashed into the sea immediately after taking off for a raid on Tokyo.

While it may not be the best work of art ever from a technical standpoint, the Sharkit Nord Harpon box art (which I just discovered on Fantastic Plastic) certainly gets the point across...

Pud. me old mate that is a great post. Im a bit of an advacado of the old box art,but that is a complete "golden find". Thanks for posting. :thumbsup: :cheers:

How about two different takes by Airfix and Revell?

The U.S. release made the UK box/header card illustration seem a little pedestrian.

I've never seen that Airfix Corsair box art before Dork, terific stuff. I do lke those classic Revell boxes with the little "brass" name tag though

Same here, what a scene on the Airfix art!, own ship been Kamikaze-ed on the back end but flying ops from the front...hard core aviators, knowing there is probably no returning to that ship for a long time, if at all.

Now if it was a RN carrier he'd be able to land after the raid just in time for tea  ;D What with the armoured decks  :thumbsup:

Quite so! Matelots with sweeping brushes and a load of quick-set  concrete  and the British Pacific Fleet will be Formidable once more.
