Maybe so, but that's hardly a basis for comparison, otherwise you could say "the Hawk is the British F-15" on the basis that the latter is held in high regard.

I suspect that the comparison might have arisen based on the idea that the P.1121 would have achieved the export success of the Phantom, i.e. it might have been, in commercial terms to Hawker what the F-4 was to McDonnell Douglas. Again, I'm not sure I buy that, though it's an unprovable point either way. We're so used to the Phantom now that it's hard to see how radical it was by late 1950s standards: a radar-equipped two-seater with loads of fuel that could carry 8 x AAMs and still have pylons left over for bombs really was something special back then.
