Weaver....the Sahara Survivour.....u that a metal chassis with plastic uppers...??? Reasonably lightweight....??? Not a solid lump so to speak.....??...H

Yes, basically the black bit is one piece of die-cast metal the orange bit is one piece of plastic and so is the white bit (which is also the whole chassis as well).  That's why you have some oddities like the orange spare tire and the black jerry cans by the doors. All three bits are riveted together: I understand that these can be Dremelled off quite easily.

Awesome......I'm thinking of special forces type vehicles that can be airlifted....one would fit in a Hip with clam shell doors.....prob 2 in a Halo.....dunno bout MH53....something to think about....cheers...

Testors F2H Banshee....another poor but simple kit, ideal for Israeli use.

I've actually drilled the rivets off the Sahara and one of the ATVs now:

1. The interior and chassis of the Sahara are actually two pieces of white plastic. I'm thinking that it would look a bit more realistic with the ride height reduced by trimming these , although that's nowhere near as simple as it sounds.

2. Drilling the rivets off is nowhere near as easy as I was lead to believe. The "rivets" are actually cast-in pegs on the upper body with their ends spun (I guess) over to mushroom them. One thing you should NOT do is assume that you can just stick a big HSS drill into them and "cone" the head off. They're hard enough that you have to treat them as a proper metal-working job, i.e. start by running a small pilot drill down them (I started with 1.6mm), then gradually work up to a size that's nearly as big as the head, then put a big one in to take the head off. Make sure you don't go through the upper body! I've done this on both of the Sahara's rivets, though the results arn't terminal.

I may well put a thread up about working with these things - not got time tonight, but watch this space.....

BW do the Supercat if your after a proper model of one !

http://www.bwmodels.co.uk/index.asp?pageid=264158

That's definately the way to go if you want an accurate Supercat, but these Matchbox jobs are only £1.25 (i.e. 1/8th the price), so for whiffy sci-fi butchering, they're ideal...

On laybay at the LHS

1 Airfix Spitfire PR19.  This should give me a spare set of 4 spoke wheels, plus the rest of it is going to be hacked around with various Freightdog bits.  Or possibly not.
