Hi chaps,

A forum member, on another forum I`m afraid, wants to make a diorama of a Wokka landing, kicking up loads of dust in a desert (the dust would ideally engulf most of the chinook).

Any suggestions or tips would be great.

This kind of thing?

He could use cotton wool balls teased out to shape.  Dunk them in a dye, let them dry then hit them with hairspray to give it some stiffness.  It'll take paint so he could add tonal effects & such.  Place them around the mount for 'chook to obscure it.  Never tried it, just an idea.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

I'm told that (pedantically) a Chinook is a WOKKA WOKKA;     Merlins are WOKKAS     cos they only have one main rotor................but this is getting into JMN  territory, and I'm sitting here looking forward to seeing your completed build!

I'm reliably informed, by 'The Best Air Traffic Controller in the RAF', whom some of you have met, that RAF Chinooks are called 'Wokkas' in the singular and that Merlins are called 'Merlins'.  ;D

Apparently the Dutch Air Force call their 'Wokkas' something completely unpronouncable to mere Brits....  ;)

I could believe that, yes.  ;D

What's the direct translation?

Something along the lines of "cityliner with roof propulsion"...

edit: On topic: I heard/read (haven't tried it yet) that the synthetic stuffing used in cuddly toys is better for this than cotton wool because it takes paint easier, whereas cotton wool apparently tends to clog up.

edit number 2: Aoshima used to sell pre-dyed cotton wool, called maku-maku or sumptin' like that, for creating smoke or dust effects.

Making use of our national penchant for rythming slang, downunder we call Chinooks - "Angy Chooks" - a "chook" is a colloquial term for a Chicken.  ;D

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

not that far from the truth really. i was listening to some interesting prog on Radio 2 a while back about how the Aussie accent is very similar to that from Suffolk, due to Suffolk being the most densly populated county in England, therefore most convicts were from Suffolk. also there was a drive to get people to volunteer for 'a better life' and since at the time there was a shortage of work combined with a rise in population had lots moving to Oz free of charge. thus Aussie accent is largly Suffolk in origin. the second place that contributed to people emmigrating (either voluntarily or at His Majestys pleasure) was London..................hence the Cockney influence

ive been trying to find the prog on Radio 2 achieve but cant

An old school friend of mine who has been in the Army since he was 16 (joined up in 1987) calls the Chinook "Mr Boeings mighty death banana"

having severed as a medica and worked on chinooks, i can salfey say they are called, 'wokka's' or flying coffins

back to the thread,  the tropical fish filet stuff would be better as its a lot thinnner than cotton wool and it stays in place

Nothing wannabe about it.  You forget, many of our earliest (forced) settlers were Cockneys.  We took only the best!
