The Centurion and Comet are the best looking tanks ever designed  ;D

What about upgrading a Comet ?

Replace Christie suspension with torsion bars
Low pressure 90mm gun
New sights
New diesel power pack
Angled front armour
4 man crew - chuck away assistant driver

Have a look at the Charioteer.   The Irish Army also had plans to upgrade the small (tiny actually) number of Comets they had (about six IIRC) with a new, open-topped turret mounting a Swedish 90mm RCL, when ammunition for the 77mm basically ran out.  However budget problems stopped them.  The Charioteer was an effort to mount a 20pdr on a Comet hull.  Worked - just.  A two man turret crew, in a high, new and very tight turret.  It was intended and deployed as an SPAT vehicle, rather than a tank.  Sold to Finland, Austria, Jordan and Lebanon.  Didn't perform very well against Israel.  Hung around though, a surprisingly long time, so it must have been fairly easy to keep running.

2 thoughts :

1 - Ratel-90 turret (exactly the same as a Panhard AML-90 turret) on a Comet hull
2 - IMI 60mm HVMS gun on a Comet hull

(Which I love...)

or go the Finnish route and stick one these babies on it:

Not many countries ever went for a coastal defence tank. ;)
What if... I had a brain?

Something like this?  ;D

This is a limited 60ish to 70ish upgrade we toyed around with last year for equipping SWMBO's wargaming faction as a second-line tank (primary one is the Centurion). In the end however we settled for Repotenciados instead, so this one never made it onto the table (actually, I should paint it one day).

Modifications include a 60mm IMI mortar for smoke, roof-mounted 12.7mm HMG and a small IR searchlight. The tank itself came built and - roughly - painted from ebay and would have to be redone in a the standard sand-dark green scheme.

The most dangerous thing in the combat zone is an officer with a map.

Like that a lot cataphractarius - does SWMBO go by clibanarius ?  ;D (forgive spelling, Latin not a strong point)
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I'm working on a 1946 1/76 resin Comet Mk 'II' with sloped glacis plate, turret front applique armour and side skirts, looks like a mini Centurion... will have to take some pics

Alas, no. More in a longbowmanwomanesque direction.

Which incidentally may explain her fascination with that peculiar contraption called FV 4005 Stage 1:

I have to remember not to show her stuff that's more powerful than the stuff she already has - because then she wants that as well, particularly if you can kill Abramse with it, something her uparmoured Centurions can't (ok, the Jagd-Cents can, but they aren't proper tanks)...  ;D

Love the FV 4005, seen the Conway before but not that  There's a mobile AA vehicle in the RA Museum at Woolwich which has similar loading "baskets" to the 4005. If memory serves it's 120mm
