Well the Mitchell is finished and I'll post a couple of pics of her on here even though she is real world. I'm a little bit disappointed with her, nice kit and i haven't managed to do it the justice it deserves  :-\.

On a completely different note the August edition of SAMI has a review build of the Airfix 1/72 Phantom. To say the reviewer is a fan of the pre/post shade, add wash and detail panel lines fraternity is putting it mildly. It is completely overdone in my opinion and makes the finished kit look like a toy.

I'm not a great fan of these techniques especially in the smaller scales but I do believe in "each to his own" and they can look good, but from a purely personal point of view he really has taken it way to far and if I were Airfix I wouldn't be that happy with it.

Honestly I think, in part, it's a way for airbrushers to justify the method. I mean.... like you said, it CAN look good but 90% of the time it's over done and looks fake to me. But, notice how there's none of that nonsense in the brush-only community.... (or very little, if I say "none" then someone will make it their life's purpose just to prove me wrong by finding one obscure instance)

Don't worry about the Mitchell... I'm sure it's fine!!!! I'm about to get mine myself but I need to do all my bill paying and errand running and shopping first but if the budget looks nice afterward, I'm pulling the trigger!

I think when brush painters do this sort of thing it's just that they either use the oil dot method, which you have to use a brush with or they are very aware of how easy it is to overdo it using a brush, and therefore work on the "less is best" principle. As I said though this build is probably the most overdone example I've seen.

You'll enjoy the Mitchell. In the main I would follow the instructions (as with all recent Airfix kits) with the exception of the fuselage glazing which on my next build I will fit and mask before attaching the wings.

Right a couple of shots of the Mitchell, real world out of the box. A nice kit which I have not done justice to. Maybe on my next one.

What's wrong with it? It looks BRILL to me!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Regards
Kit

I thought I'd post a couple of pics up of the kits that have been taken from their homes on the shelves and placed within arms reach and marked out to join the production line.

A Couple of AZ 109's, both will be Wif's

2 for the Hungarian/Slovak conflict of 1939. One real, one Wif

Finally an odd one for me. First tank for a very long time. I saw this at a recent show and couldn't resist it. At least it's 1/72 and not 1/35. ;)

I know there are some things lurking in the depths of that photo that I'm not happy with, but thank you Kit  ;D

Same.

By the way, what's with the ginormous map of the (central) Med under the left cockpit windows?

After it completed it's tour the aircraft and crew (one of whom was a Canadian. I just thought I'd throw that in for our Canuck friends  ;)) were sent on a morale boosting trip around the States and the map shows the targets that the aircraft attacked. The scroll and medal ribbons on the other side are all part of that trip as well.

Only things I can see wrong with it is it isn't whiffed and i'm not keen on the colour.  Other than that it looks great.
Good job.

Enjoy the 109s.  Don't forget that panel line down the middle of the fuselage (but offset slightly)... ;D ;)

I've already built a couple of their 109's and they are nice builds. Do you how much the offset is in 1/72 scale ?  ;)

From reference pics it looks to be about 15mm.  So on the model, about 0.2mm.  Please make sure you get it accurate... ;)

The funny thing about the 109 seam is that when the 109 aficionados started modelling
it as it existed on the real aircraft, they were getting dinged in contests for not filling
the kit seams
.
;D

It took a while for it to be accepted by the majority.
