Ahah, so THAT'S what those Speys were for!

Sound great, a pity the USN didn't take them up on it, an F-28 going off the cat would have been awesome.

Sounds like something for Spinners to have a go at doing

Now this is a project to watch. I think Bill Gunston's book "Warplanes of the Future" has concept art for the F-28 COD that always fascinated me back when I first got the book years ago.

How does the F-28 compare to the DC-9 or MD-80 Harro?  Aircraft in Miniature have just re-released their 1/72 MD-80 vacuform and this might be something to follow. Mind you I do have one of AiM's old DC-9 kits in the stash.

The fuselage diameter is almost identical, but the DC-9 and all its variants are much longer. The F-28 I'm doing is 23.6 m long, the DC-9 was available in lengths from 30 to 45 m. I could see a custom variant of the DC-9 being offered though.

The USN had the DC9-30 in service, albeit in landbased form, as the C-9B Skytrain II. The -30 was 119 ft long (36 m).

Seriously!?!?
I love the illustration. Real life can be sometimes even more weird than expected.
Great that you go for this one!

From a fake airliners site, this pic gives an impression of what a shortened DC-9 might look like:

Also note the afterburners, it's very tempting to add those to my build, but I want to keep this one as close to the RW proposal as possible.

The AiM DC-9 has a decal option for the USAF C-9 Nightingale variant.  I might just follow you along Harro with a Navy COD variant though because it sounds very interesting, but I've got a few other stalled projects to finish first.

Aurora made a 1/72 DC-9-10 which shows up on eBay regularly. The DC-9-10 was: "The Series 10 has an overall length of 104.4 feet (31.82 m), a fuselage length of 92.1 feet (28.07 m)". Comabt Models/Roberts Model has a 1/72 vac kit which I understand is a vac copy of the old Aurora kit. I have an Aurora kit in the stash with plans to do the COD & there are a couple of wooden display models on eBay of the F.28 which are close to 1/72 that I've thought of getting & turning into its COD.

There was also a proposal from Douglas for a DC-9 Series 10 as a COD- nose gear lengthened and moved back, folding wings and deletion of the thrust reversers.

Speaking of which, tonight I've done some initial planning on the giant extendable front gear leg. The leg needs to be extended to twice its original size, preferably without having to rebuild half the aircraft to accommodate it. I'm planning to make the entire leg one big hydraulic cylinder. I've got some Albion Alloys tubing which would be perfect, but my word, it's fragile. 0.6 mm diameter-and there's another tube that would fit inside that! Wall thickness is 0.1 mm.

Meanwhile, I'm preparing the fuselage halves. One of the cuts has gone wrong so there's now a big gash that needs to be filled. I've added lots of internal bracing to make sure the pieces stay together.

How about the system the B-58 used? The upper pivot of the nose leg translated forward as it retracted to avoid smacking the nose of the weapons pod just behind it. Using that plus an extendable leg like a TSR2 or an FAA Phantom should work OK.
