Sigh, what do you do when..

So, what do you do when the model you've been dreaming about building for such a long time just won't change from an ugly duckling into that swan you envisaged in your mind's eye?

Bin it?

Put it to one side and wait for another time?

Change it into something else entirely?

Give up in disgust?

QuotePut it to one side and wait for another time

Don't leave it in plain sight or it will taunt you, but mothball it and focus on something else for a change, the mojo for a project does come back in most cases and areas that just wouldn't gel together originally are often soon resolved when the mojo is back. However if you have binned it, given up or converted it to something different you can find the frustrating when inspiration comes back and the model is no longer exists.

That's a judgement call that only you can make, Brian. :-X

I have never binned a model.

I do have one scratch-build sitting unfinished waiting for final judgement on whether I'll scrap it or try to complete it, either as planned or as something else.

I haven't changed anything into something completely different, yet (see above).

I figure "Give up in disgust" = "Bin it"

I guess the important thing for me is to go back & assess my vision of what I want the kit to become & what it actually is:
- Am I trying to turn a camel into a thoroughbred? Can the model actually achieve what I want it to?
- Is it just my lack of skill or is it that the parts are incompatible with my vision?
- Do I need another cup of coffee or will tea suffice?

I guess I'll really find out with my next planned build; an armoured battlefield logistics transport constructed from 2 Stryker's.

Hope that helps! ;D

When this has happened to me I've put the model away somewhere out of sight. Then maybe a frew months or even years later I'll come across it, start again and it goes as sweet as a nut

Withmodels I know will be "fun" (like Unicraft) I simply do a small bit at a time, put it away for a few days and then repeat until finished.

Must admit I've never binned an incomplete kit, there are stil a few incomplete ones put away awaiting discovery but I've never binned one.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Same procedures here, sometimes you get a "hangar queen" although not the kind that gets raided for spares. While usually a one-at-a-time builder, I often had a bit more fun doing a few at a time and alternating them, much like Sentinel Chicken is currently doing, also in 1/144.

I always have about a dozen on the go at once as I work on the giant rotating carousel principle.  You don't finish much very often, but it's impressive when you do.  It also helps boredom.  Get sick of one, just put it down and get on with another.

I have a few sitting that I ran out of motavation on because they were being difficult. I pull them out and then find something that clears a problem or two up.
My first model after doing nothing for 10 years due to Life interference was Put on display by the craft shop. The 2nd was a Snap-Tite. A Snap-Tite can a fun relaxing build that gets you back in the groove.

This where my models go that don't quite go how I want,
I put them in what I call my D.N.F. Box (Did not finish)
Where I like to think that they 'Mature' (like a good wine) :drink:

I occasionally look in the boxes (usually while looking for something else!)
And something catches my eye, and off we go. Some however seem to stay for longer
Than others.....

The 747-400 and Constellation for instance have been in the box for approx. 10 years :banghead:
The Meteor for about 2 months.
But I know that one day they All will be finished, (they're not dead, merely resting )
So put it to one side and carry on with something else.

But there's at least TWO of them in there, one looks like T7 1/2, the one with the green tail.

I know where you are coming from with those builds, I have a few on a shelf next to me, 2 F-16's that are nearly finished, an F-15e the same and a 2 seat mig-23, which annoyed me with the bad fitting parts, mainly the landing gear. I should move them out of my sight as I keep looking at them picking them up and then getting disheartened by them. This doesn't do me any favours either as it puts me off wanting to finish other stuff too.
They will get done as will yours but don't rush into them just do them as and when, they aren't eating anything are they??

Your right Kit, the one with the green tail will be a T7mod with ejection seats and clear (NF14) canopy
It's based on the Matchbox kit and as ever I had trouble with the U/C. So I stopped. The F8 was built to accompany it.

The two things that strike me about your "almost" bin is first that it is as large as some peoples "finished" collections, your display shelves must be incredible.
Also that you seem to go strictly by subject and scale is secondary if considered at all, kudo's 2U there!

Keith,

EVERYONE has trouble with the M'box NF14 undercarriage!

It was designed by a total prat who completely forgot to translate his ideas of where the various bits go onto the instruction leaflet. My three PR19s all have different arrangements, simply because I could NOT get the various jacks to fit where it said they should. The early Frog/Novo Mk IV has a much better arrangement, as does the Airfix Mk III.

I do like the idea of a T7 with an NF14 clear canopy, inspired thinking.
