The ZE class destroyer will be finished soon, but here is the next ship project, a Bismarck carrier conversion. In difference to my Odin hybrid-carrier, this will be a full size carrier.

The main parts are coming from an Aosima 1/700 scale Bismarck and from the left overs of a Revell Intrepid carrier. The idea is to design many of the parts I need in CAD and then 3D print them.

Starting with a 3D design, the main hangar. For this I choose Tinkercad www.tinkercad.com, a free online 3D program which is quite easy to use to construct the model in there:



Sliced with Cura 3.6 and printed on an Anycubic Mega with 0.1 mm layer height, the 3D printed hangar looks like this:

As it will be painted, I used some white filament for it.


It took a few fast test prints to get everything right, but now it fits to the hull:

At both sides, some smaller (narrower) hanger parts will be added, I am currently designing those.


Test-wise, the flight deck is added:


For the island structure, I use some parts of the original Intrepid island, but I want to integrate some of the Bismarck parts to give it a more "German" look.
First thing to do is to add an extension to the island to make it a bit wider. Here is the 3D construction:

As this came up in another post, the printing time for the hangar was about 3 hours. With a layer height of 0.1 mm. The test prints I made (with layer height of 0.2mm) were about 80-90 minutes.

Now worked on the forward part of the hangar:



As the bow of the ship slightly goes up, the lower part of this hangar must go up a bit as well. Took several attempts to get this right.

As a FDM printer cannot print overlapping parts, structures like the platform at the side of the hangar need some support below it. The slicer program adds this support automatically.

After 2,5 hours of printing, the result was this (with support):



After removing the support - sometimes it can simply broken away, sometimes you need more force to remove it and sometimes you break everything...

Last changes have been made to the backward hangar, here is the view form Tinkercad: (Not that you think I can design those parts so fast, I am working on the hangar for at least 2 weeks now and made several test prints to get it right, a lot try&error):



In the Slicer (Cura 3.60), this is how the 3D model is prepared to print:


Red are the outer walls, yellow the top or bottom. The blue parts are the support structure created by the slicer which have be removed after printing. Calculated print time is just under 2 hours, 2,3 meters of filament will be used to print this.

This time, the 3D design and printing does not seem to like me. While i am currently constructing the support structure below the flight-deck at bow and stern, everything looks fine in the 3D program and in the slicer. But the printer refuses to print. It just makes 1-2 layers and then it stoops. So I have to find another construction to use for the support.

In the meantime, AA range finders are prepared, to give the ship a more "German" look:



Btw, does anyone know a good source for 2cm and 3,7 cm AA guns? Any kit that has a many of them included?  I need quite a lot of them and so far, I am not successful in printing some of them as they are too small.

These people do loads in 1/350, and some of it is stunning, but I don't think they do 1/700 ?
