A little Heller kit in 1/400 that I bought together with another Heller kit that will be the next Whatif ship. More about this later.

The Pourquoi-Pas? was a french arctic expeditions ship build in 1908 and lost in 1936 near Iceland killing all but on on board.

Build OOB, but added some PE parts and crew.

Once I have a hobby room again I might try some of those Heller sailing ships.  Thanks for the inspiration!

In WW1 and WW2, the German Navy used converted merchant ship as Merchant Raiders. Equipped with 10-15 cm guns, torpedoes and sometimes even with a float plane, this civilian looking ships were a danger to allied merchant shipping.

There was one unique ship in WW1, the "Seeteufel" which was a sailing ship operating in the Indian Ocean. Nobody had expected to use a sailing ship as a warship in WW1.

So lets turn the time to WW2, again, German merchant raiders are operating in the oceans. But of course, there was no sailing ship used in this war, but what if.... ?

So lets think about one. Starting with this little Heller kit in 1/700 scale, the Pamir. Build in 1905, this one was significant bigger then the original Seeteufel, but of course its name will be "Seeteufel II". Traditions.

So far, painted hull and working on the deck, removing some parts from it that would be obstacles for the armament



We need some guns - so I printed some 10cm guns. Will not need so much and I have to see if I would also need some smaller armament.



A float plane? I still don't know if i should add this little Heinkel plane to the ship.

Interesting idea, are you going to give it auxiliary steam power or leave her as pure sail ?

As for the Arado. Might get a bit awkward trying to deploy it and then lift it back on board again with all that rigging ? Unless you give her a hatch in the hull for deploying boats as well as the Arado ?

I think a small diesel engine would be ok for it.

Those merchant raiders that had a float plane used a crane to deploy it to the sea. Of course there were no catapults for them. I still have to see if it fits somehow.

Yes and it would be a problem to deploy it with that rigging getting in the way. Although you might be able to use one of the davit stations ?

I will need at least some additional crane for it, as the plane would be too big for a boat davits.
