Kingston (Sopwith, Hawker, BAe) aircraft projects, models and pictures

At the recent Kingston Aviation Festival many models and paintings were on display:

My favourite was the P.1216 model displayed along with Harriers, Hunters etc:



There were also posters outlining Kingston's 100 years of aviation history that have some interesting pics and info, now available on the festival website:

including one on projects that features the P.1083, P.1121, P.1154, P.1216, P.1035, P.1092, P.1233 as well as an un-numbered monoplane pusher from 1930, the Fury Monoplane of 1933 and a mid 1950s Mach 3 fighter.

What's the aircraft at the top of the painting? Looks like a Yak-141, only shorter?

An early F-35 too, with the sideways opening front fan doors. And it looks like a 4 Sqdn scheme too.

Its the X-35B, which makes the painting a little bit odd as the F-35B only really did vertical landings as lacked that last bit of umpf for VTO, thus the painting is technically dropping down the development ladder back through time rather than climbing up

I didn't get to handle that model, but did spend a happy time at Brough some time ago, with their 1/32nd scale high speed P.1216 model, which cost a million quid in today's money! Luckily maraging steel is tough stuff, but I'd have been wary handling any of the models at the Kingston Aviation Festival as anything unique and breakable makes me a bit edgy!

Extending the scope of this thread a bit, is there a list of all the Hawker P.xxxx numbers anywhere?

I've looked on the Net but only came up with the well known ones, and I need to find a handy gap in their numbering.........

Putman's book 'Hawker Aircraft since --" lists the numbers P1001 to P.1214 if that helps Kit, after that I think they'e BAe numbers.

I don't have that Putnam, but my library may. I'm looking for a gap between the P.1081 and the P.1121 to fit my time scale.

Well there are some gaps but the list is of ""Unbuilt and Unfinished Projects"" (it starts on page 632 FYI). All Hawker project numbers followed the last one and if there's a gap in this list you have to go back through the book to find the project number where it was used in real life.
Having said that, the most concrete one you could use is P.1086. The note for this number says, 'Not used: possible confusion with the F-86'

There's a couple which you could possible use, P.1076, the note to is says 'Investigation and design development of P.1067 [prototype Hunter] but then nothing on the outcome of it, and then there's P.1084 and P.1085, the notes saying 'Design for delta wing investigations: Not proceeded with".  There are a few like this but you'd have to look for yourself as to what might fit your project.

The gap in the numbers you have stated are mostly to do with Hawks and Hunters.

Oooh magic, I like the sound of the P.1086, thanks very much. It rolls nicely off the tongue and the period is right too, I've already selected its serial no....
