Airfix/Heller 1/72 scale 109 now FINISHED!

My 1/72 scale Bf 109K-4 from the Airfix special boxing of the very old Heller kit is finished, the model was built O.O.B. and painted and marked as a Bf 109K-4 operated by 9./JG 27 in 1945.
Sharp eyed readers will notice the pilots head armor is not attached, the reason for this is it was missing in my kit. For a $5.00 kit I was not going to bother and try and find a replacement.

The weather has closed in for the past week making it difficult to get outside and take proper pics so this is the best I could do for right now.









My next two models will be Japanese subjects.

Very nice rendition of an old kit.  I've seen a 109K in the Australian War Memorial.  What I found remarkable was the low standard of finish on it.  There were HUGE gaps where the engine cowling and other inspection panels were.  This wasn't because of damage but how it was actually built.  I could fit two of my fingers in some of the gaps.

This little model was not much fun to try and add weathering to it because of the soft detail and raised panel lines so I tried finishing the model with a patchy looking paint job and some dirt near the rear of the fuselage.

One of my models that are on the bench now is one of the very early MPM kits and its a very crude limited run kit, some of the parts require a lot of carving to get them close to the shape they were intended to be.

This little Airfix/Heller 109 is a bit bland but my other finished model the 1/32 scale Hasegawa Fw 190D-9 is much more interesting...and its a what-if too.

You are quite correct. Many pilots   had the armour either cut down or totally removed in order to save weight and improve rearward visibility. Das Archiv der Deutschen Luftwaffe (Aufklärungsgruppe).  may well hold the paperwork you need to  confirm this.........or at least, telling them this will give the more strident JMNs pause for thought.
